Le Robert Mobile App Review
Le Robert also called the Dixel app is one of the most useful French dictionaries I have encountered as a French speaker/learner. This app is also the one that most of my fellow French university students use. It has everything a normal paper dictionary has and loads of additional features.
(I may have gone slightly overboard with pictures because I really like this app)
Like any traditional dictionary, this dictionary gives you the definition of the word you’ve searched for (only the definition, no translation) and the phonetic transcription so that you know how to pronounce it. Its additional features include having more synonyms (and antonyms) than you would probably have in a normal dictionary, for verbs the entire conjugation is saved on the app and when you search for a word it also enables you to see phrases and figures of speech.
Another feature the app has, which isn’t really necessary but can be fun to use, is that you can play anagram and bigram on the app and this at the same time enables you to learn new words.
There is also a different way to learn new words: the discovery option. In this option you can simply tap on random words that you do not know and then you can see the definition.
When learning new words or if you keep searching for the same word over and over again you can “like” (with the tick or diamond icon) them and the app will give you a list of the words you’ve “liked”.
The last feature which personally I have never used, is the crossword assistant that can, as the name says, help you solve crosswords (this is slightly unnecessary for me personally but it might be useful for avid crossword solvers)
I only see two downsides with this app. The biggest one: if you’re not an Apple user you will not be able to obtain this app. The second: the app costs a bit (5$/5CHF) but is well worth it if you are serious about learning French or if you are already a French user.
btw this review might seem as if I was sponsored because it is so positive but it isn’t and I just use this app all the time when I read books and write essays.
