I suppose you could say we “wholeheartedly” recommend you check out this new Vancouver project named DIY HIFI, who just released his debut Self-Titled EP. Half Hearted, the current single lifted from the five track release, is a bass rolling, drum driven indie dance meets smooth swinging pop rock charmer. Dusty heat rises off the tune, while a shiny top of melodious disco strings and guitar support the stacked vocals emanating from the groove riddled  jam.  DIY HIFI is the brainchild of Vancouver musician and producer Ian Bevis, formerly of Bear Mountain. Bevis started releasing music as DIY HIFI in 2018, mixing dance ready funk and disco with earnest songwriting sensibility. Most of my gear i aquired over time slowly upgrading one part of my setup after another I often switch my equipment around to get a different color to the sound. This equipment may not be the best organized or looking but i can assure you the sound beats even the most expensive systems i have run into.

lots of work! I can only take a few hours worth of this at a pop my thumbs just can't take the abuse and it's a lot of hand strength to get the boards squared up with the clamps on and move stuff around and get it right before it sets up. Now I'm sanding and filling holes. I'm out of filler if you believe that! I want to go to lowes and get some more but it's super nasty out today.Snowing like the end is coming. So... I will just continue to sand. I need to install the feet/spikes on the second cabinet today. I might do a first coat of black just to see what it's going to look like and then sand that too. Figure I have a couple more days or week nights worth to go before I finish and assemble the drivers and crosovers and button it all up. Patience gasshopper!

TriTrix Speaker kit from Parts Express.

Initially my kit came with a broken part and I was having a hard time identifying the tops and bottoms because the parts count says "board C two tops and two bottoms" well... they are not the same size! I would expect the use of another letter for either the tops or bottoms since they are not the same size piece but ok whatever. I figured it out.

The replacement part came last week I think, but schedules being what they are I haven't had any free time to work on them. Or at least not much time. I did get the crossovers done last weekend. Even as simple as they are, it took me several hours to get it all done. I like to take my time, make sure everything is neat and tidy. Plus, they recommend hot glue for mounting the crossover components! What the heck?! I'm not a fan of hot glue, it has a lovely habit of letting go of the parts it is "supposedly" gluing in place. So I opted for zip ties since I have a lot of them and they generally don't wear out.

So... I began working on the first speaker cabinet and notice that the front panel is warped and not flat. So I pick it up and give it a little flex just to see if getting the front pannel flat is going to be a problem and *SNAP* GAH!!! !@#$!@#$!!!! Much swearing ensues. Ok fine what's one more broken part?! Well I like to think there isn't much I can't fix, really, so I line up all the broken fibers, and see if I can get it mostly back where it belongs, yup, so I give it a squirt of wood glue, and proceed to work it back in. Clamp it down, and clamp the bajeezuz out of it.

Saving the front panel added an hour plus to putting the first one together but together it went! It's pretty solid, I'm pleased I was able to save it. Some minor sanding will be required but nothing drastic. I will attack it with wood filler for the screw holes and then sand it all and I have a nice satin black gallon of paint all mixed up from Lowes to finish the cabinets in before trying to wire it up and mount the speakers.

I'm very happy with my initial results. More to come as I get the second one done, sand them and get them ready to install the drivers!
