I haven’t really posted much about this, but on December 31st, police came to our gallery to check our special occasion permit which escalated into the brutalization of one of my closest friends and the owner. This incident caused severe damage and led to the unexpected closure of the space. We’re currently raising funds that will go towards the reinstallation of the gallery, legal representation, and project repayment. We’re a black owned gallery that’s a home and safe space for Toronto artists, Blank Canvas Gallery (April 2016) is an art house and open space powered by creative collective Omit Limitation. Sadly, I mostly missed out on this space. I was at shows upstairs, both before and after, and a very few at SiT itself; but the early 90s is when I bowed out of the scene to focus on adult issues like finishing college and raising my kids. Had my life been on a different trajectory (which probably means, if I was younger), I would have been much more involved. I know most of the folks interviewed here to some degree, tho not that so many had roots going back there.
