Where are America's DIY spaces?
During my three-and-a-half month jaunt around the US and Canada, I plan on visiting as many DIY spaces as I can.
Sheffield, the South Yorkshire city I live in, is blessed with some great DIY music venues: the long-established The Audacious Art Experiment (TAAE); punky upstarts The Lughole; and the kinda-on-hiatus-as-a-gig-venue Tye Die Tapes.
Last year I spoke to Luke from TAAE, and he explained that their inclusive, experimental ethos was partly inspired by the members of TAAE's experiences of playing gigs at American DIY venues. Later in 2014 I was lucky enough to interview Chris Clavin of the awesome Plan-It-X Records, on the book tour stop-off he had at TAAE. Chris told me more about the DIY scene in America and how it worked - which made me even more excited to see it for myself!
But where should I go? Where, Tumblr, are the DIY spaces I should be visiting?
Obviously having a shiny website or social media presence isn't a top priority for lots of DIY venues - most don't have the resource or desire to create something like that. Consequently, finding out what DIY venues to check out is a bit hard to achieve through mere Googling...
Turns out there's a great looking DIY venue called The Trunk Space in Phoenix - the first destination on my trip. And Do DIY is a refreshingly simple yet info-filled directory of DIY spaces across the world. There's also your standard listicle-type feature floating around, but they don't seem like the best place to find out this kind of punky info.
So - any help?
