Captain America wants you to join the DIY Science Zone at GeekGirlCon ‘15!!
Silly hat options! If the DIY Science Zone reaches $3000 in donations by Thursday morning, I will wear one of these hats to proctor my final exam. There are explanatory and/or snarky captions on the photos.
What is the DIY Science Zone? It’s a hands-on, all-ages activity area at GeekGirlCon where we help people do science. I’ll be running an experiment on Secret Writing; other activities include tracking New Horizons, extracting DNA from food, testing for sugar, and investigating UV light.

If you’re so moved to donate, no monetary amount is too small.
Yes, it's a tuba-based, "Dungeons and Dragons"-themed parody of "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons. Lyrics below:
d20 Damage (with apologies to "Imagine Dragons")
We’re waking up, we drew our maps We leveled up our characters We painted up our miniatures [mmmm] We’re cracking up, we’re goofing off We’re ignoring the campaign plot This is it: the DM’s pissed Whoa
The DM thought he wrote a hard campaign Enough to last us through the day Time to start a new game, start a new game Time to start a new game, a new game
Whoa, whoa d20 damage, d20 damage Whoa, whoa d20 damage, d20 damage
We made our camp, we donned our clothes He set us up an ambush, I suppose He's killing off our characters Whoa
We’re breaking in, we’re goofing off We ignored the campaign plot This is it: the DM’s pissed Whoa We woke up dead, they've broken all our bones Took an arrow in my knee Now I’ve got a dead mage, got a dead mage Welcome to a dead mage, to a dead mage Whoa, whoa d20 damage, d20 damage Whoa, whoa d20 damage, d20 damage We’ve been spending most our lives livin’ in a gamer’s paradise Now he’s eaten all our dice, and that’s the end of playing nice
Whoa, whoa d20 damage, d20 damage Whoa, whoa d20 damage, d20 damage

Of Möbius strips and Klein bottles
On October 11 and 12, I’ll be helping my friends bring SCIENCE to GeekGirlCon. My contribution: making Möbius strips and Klein bottles out of paper! If you couldn’t make it to GeekGirlCon in Seattle, or maybe you came to my station, but you want the instructions on how to do this activity at home? Well, you’re in luck!

The First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics, as set to music by Flanders and Swann and performed by me. A small amount of damage was done to my p-chem textbook, but it had it coming.
The DIY Science Zone at GeekGirlCon is important and it relies on the support of viewers like you. I'll be running one of the experiments there, and I hope you can come join us.
Please enjoy my Act of Whimsy in honor of the donations we've received so far, and if you are so moved you can contribute here.
This year we are once again bringing hands-on science to the masses at GeekGirlCon! I'll be making stuff glow with luminol, and my fellow scientists will be showcasing everything from biology to astronomy and beyond. But we need your help to get it done. Any amount you can donate is appreciated, and unlocks Acts of Whimsy!
I'll be doing two, both costume-related, because I am a Master of Science and a master-class costumer. At $2500 I'll be recording a message as one of the AVTR program scientists from James Cameron's film Avatar, and I'll do a dramatic reading of one of my favorite science songs if we make it closer to our goal.
We Want You! to Support Science.
And of course, come to GeekGirlCon and do science with us! That's just as important as the financial support. We want to teach you things and get you pumped for science.
