i think about gaku and eva's band practice sometimes... eva suddenly experiencing a flash from her past - a broken melody that reminds her of home, a few isolated steps from a traditional dance, a chant used for fertility rituals - screaming in pain, while gaku's just trying to have a good time. he wanted to hang out with 'a friend' - or as close as he feels he could get to one anyway.

the first time it happens, he finds it annoying - why does HE have to deal with this? the band isn't gonna make any progress! - but i think afterwards, it leaves a bad taste in his mouth. maybe even keeps him up at night. music is so important to him, that i think the idea of it affecting someone else like that would be almost... haunting?

obviously, gaku struggling with empathy and being part of a colonial project means music isn't something they could bond over in a 'normal' way, but it could be interesting to see gaku's dynamic with eva explored through music. it would be a nice a way of learning about futurum and its people and culture(s), while also developing eva further.

the fact that ima taught himself how to play a few musical instruments so that he could make some extra money makes me think of gaku asking ima to join his band (though of course, ima declines)...

i think it's interesting that ima specifically says that he's good at playing multiple instruments, but he doesn't really seem to Enjoy music - i think the only time he ever talks about it is to complain about lalalulala. on the other hand, it seems to me like gaku can't play any specific instrument(s) and instead does a lot of work arranging/composing using music software. just another way in which they're opposites!

i think gaku dislikes most pop music, but he still listens to it - it's good to know what's trendy, even if he has no interest in replicating it personally, and i feel like that's the sort of knowledge that would be useful for certain part-time jobs (including dj-ing).

i also think that, on an abstract level, he believes being knowledgeable about music could increase his chances of getting a girlfriend or impressing his theoretical guy friends... but this theory definitely falls apart, just because his tastes are so Niche and Specific. i'd really want to see him, eito, and darumi talk about music, because i think they would have the most eclectic tastes And talking about it to each other would invariably piss someone off somehow, because they're all very opinionated.

as much as comedy is not a great route for gaku, i really love the insights we get about his music preferences from his assignment.

the first question is pretty straightforward (answers for metal -> rock, respectively):

gaku seems to like both rock and metal, but he either flat-out prefers rock, or just prefers writing rock over metal.

the second question is more vibes-based:

right -> wrong answers, respectively:

based on what we see in other routes, this is pretty expected; he doesn't care about musical trends or being popular. he's more interested in pursuing his own niche preferences and ideas musically. i like how, if you get it wrong, he gets mad at takumi and talks himself into the right answer, much like what happens in his persuasion.

finally, the third question: theme.

if you choose either of the first two answers, he gets mad and talks himself into the right answer AGAIN:

he likes songs that are slow and deep and 'make you look inside yourself' but are also optimistic/motivational? his preferences are so specific! he almost sound a bit pretentious talking about it lol. if you immediately get it right, though:

he gets sooooo excited - SO funny that gaku is apparently also a love and peace guy... we need to talk more about this.

i keep seeing people writing off gaku's poverty or acting like it's somehow irrelevant or that he's middle class (i guess because they feel that it makes him more sympthetic, and they don't want to extend sympathy to a character they deem 'annoying' or 'problematic'), but his entire thematic purpose in the context of the war hinges on his poverty background.

it's not a secret that the military uses financial stability (ex. paying for university, healthcare coverage, lifetime guaranteed employment, etc.) as a recruiting tool and that this is particularly effective in recruiting working class people who would not be able to afford those things otherwise. that is what gaku is there to represent! (this even extends towards his hobby in music; when i was in high school, almost every single music competition or music festival i went to had navy band recruiters. i personally knew people that debated joining the navy, because it was the only way for them to afford pursuing music after high school.)

gaku intially doesn't want to fight because what normal, working class person does? he has too much to lose! if he dies, who is going to take care of his siblings? so, how does takumi convince him to fight? first, he tells gaku that he can earn money (aforementioned military recruitment tactic for poor people), and then he tells gaku that if he fights he saves his siblings, directly countering gaku's internal concern; if you don't fight for them, they will die, but if you fight for them you can save them. (unspoken: even if you die, at least they'll get your invader bounty!)
