Local radio stations play a big role in bringing communities together. The local radio station I listen to most is WYEP, a non-commercial public radio station. Tonight DJ Selecta did a two-hour tribute to Bill Withers on his Grand Groove Radio. I already knew he is a great DJ, but damn, the show was seamless and so good.
Going to the WYEP Website tonight I saw the news that the host of a popular Saturday afternoon show called The Soul Show for fourteen years, Stephen Chatman has died from a Covid 19 infection. The appreciation of Stephen Chatman was written by Mike Canton, the current host of the show. Reading the obituary was a jolt because while I never met Chatman, I knew his laugh and personality, it seemed I’d lost a friend.
The connections local radio make are ones over a long thread of time.
