Touching Hearts
When I was fourteen, I lost a little girl that was very close to me. She was seven and battling cancer. You would think that this would have made her bitter and sad, but she was the happiest and most at-peace person I have ever known. She told me once “I have been told I speak with wisdom beyond my years, but all I know is that I speak with God beyond my years. I am not afraid to die.” The last thing she ever told me is that I needed to forgive. Forgive my family, forgive my friends, but most importantly, to forgive myself.
Her death was a very low point in my life. I had two abusive parents battling alcoholism, I had just lost my baby brother, I had another baby brother that I was practically raising, and I was in an abusive relationship with a boy who was five years older than me. It took me a very long time, but I finally realized how Bella had lived her life. She looked for the good in people. Bella touched everyone she knew. “When you begin to touch your hear or let your heart be touched, you begin to discover that it’s bottomless, that it doesn’t have any resolution, that this heart is huge, vast, and limitless” (Chodron 91). My life has dramatically changed in the last five years. I have taken Bella’s advice in forgiveness, though it was not an easy road in the beginning. I have learned to be happy in whatever I do. And I have tired to reach out in whatever ways I can to help those in need around me. Bella was only seven years old, but she touched everyone around her’s hearts. I am doing everything I can to do the same.
