Assassination Classroom Wrap-up Post
Boy howdy is there a lot to talk about. This is the first big series that I’ve finished (as of writing this, The Promised Neverland only has two more chapters left), so I honestly have no idea where to begin with this. If I had to think of a starting point, the focal point of the series comes to mind. Koro Sensei, what can I say about him that I haven’t already? He’s just a pure distillation about what a good teacher should be, attentive to what his students are going through, nudging them in a correct direction without trying to control their lives, dispensing solid advice with a gentle word and reprimanding only when necessary. He is the heart and soul of this series, and Matsui’s assessment was correct, if he didn’t nail his final moments, this series would not have worked half as well as it did. I’m going to miss Koro, but he was fantastic for this series. Speaking of things that were needed to make the ending great, the other students and teachers. While there were clearly more important students than others, I am glad everyone at least got a moment to themselves, really fleshed them out well and had them all contribute enough to make that ending hit hard. Now, Karasuma and Irina are also pretty interesting components of this story, giving an adult perspective and being more regular teachers. Because while no one can ever hope to be a super teacher like Koro, you could be like Karasuma and Irina fairly easily, flawed, but still keeping your students’ interests at heart, even if you have a failing on your part occasionally. I like that.
As for the story itself, I enjoyed it, kind of a mix of slice of life and more serious storylines, reminds me of Gintama in some ways. Slice of life bits always help immensely with getting you attached to characters, and it was used to great affect here, even more minor characters had a lot of personality and memorability.
I can’t go a whole wrap-up post without mentioning the Kaede Kayano twist, as a fan of One Piece, I give absolute hats off to how well setup that twist was, the author knew exactly what he wanted for the characters and made sure to have it all there from the start. In fact, I gotta say how impressed I am by how this series is just a fair mystery with all the clues there for you to be able to figure it out, as exemplified when I manged to theorize that Koro may have been the Grim Reaper just by learning about them the first time, still sad I didn’t stick with the theory. Oh well, you win some and you lose some, but it really does show off how well thought out this series was.
Would I recommend this series to other people? Absolutely, I already bought the boxset for my younger brother, so I have already fallen into the pit. Reading this series has made me very interested in checking out the author’s other work, Neuro, as some say they even prefer it to Assassination Classroom, but I kind of want to give myself some space from Matsui for a bit. So, if you have any suggestions for other series, please send an ask to me! But, until then, thanks for sticking with me on this journey. It’s been fun.
