DJP #12

in my two essays my authors both have different ideas on the black lives matter movement. Author heather MacDonald says that the black lives matter is promoting false evidence and is a danger to police and African american lives. While Author Ranjana Natarajan says that the black Lives movement is alerting all peoples of how corrupt the police are and how they are dangerous they can be.

Author MacDonald says “that the black lives matter narrative racial criminal justice system is false and dangerous”(MacDonald 2-3)

In the essays both authors feel that the black lives movement has a huge impact on how the american public sees the united states police force. While author MacDonald feels that the impact is negative and will put officers and citizens in unnecessary danger. While author Natarajan feel that the black lives matter movement can finally bring a new beginning in the way police and citizens connect and can put to bed the animosity the minorities community feels towards the police force.

Keating

Keating’s work in Transformation Now! really encompasses much of what we have talked about this semester in class. On the very first week of class, we had our compassionate listening workshop and were assigned to read “Listening with the Heart” by Carol Hwoschinsky.  Hwoschinsky argues that compassionate listening is not something that comes naturally, but something that requires intention and discipline as it “is difficult to listen to the opinions of others when in disagreement. It requires impartiality” (Hwoschinsky 3). Keating supports this theory by saying that “any slippage - any willingness to consider the alternative perspectives - seems to weaken ;our position and expose us to attack, we refuse to seriously consider the limitations of out current perspectives” (Keating 6). Both authors say that being able to identify with someone who’s viewpoint differs from our own is difficult, but  Hwoschinsky takes it a step further by giving ways to deal and cope with that in a calm manner whiile Keating says that it has been taught to us for a long time to challenge other viewpoints we don’t agree with. 

The idea of intersectionality appears in Keating’s work as well. She says that “each individual being is interrelated will all that exists - on multiple levels and in multiple ways, ranging from economics and ecology to language, social systems, and energy” (Keating 11). This is comparable to Rosario Morales’ “We’re All in the Same Boat”. Morales says “color and class don’t define people or politics” and “the basis of our unity is that in the most important way we’re all in the same boat” (Morales 91, 93). Keating, however, discusses how this is an issue because we refuse to realize we have so much in common, and Morales talks about how although we are the same, her people receive much more racism than white people do. 

All of the reading we have done this semester ultimately link together, kind of like how we as humans do in intersectionality.
