Well that's the first - and swankest - leg of the Spring Racing Carnival done and delightfully dusted. Note first, my dearestdear frocky connoisseurs, that I did it in an ingeniously elegant apostrophe of Panamanian straw with a cunning spray of stripped bronze feathers angled into its ascent by millinery genius Phillip Rhodes. (Nobody - but, nobody wore a more beautiful hat; proof's in the first flip pic.) But, back to BMW Caulfield Cup Day; an unseasonably warm and blustery one with a cracking kneezup sprung with caviar, freshucked oysters, inspired can-apes and rivers of Moet in the co-hosted Melbourne Racing Club and David Jones Caulfield Lounge. Today we learned several sparkly truths; that the perfumed swarm of Insta-girls (pretty poppets, flowery frocks, hookerhigh heels, messed cornrow braids, crown on top) still rule the world; that gluegunned headbands are the new fascinator, that nothing elegant happens after 6 pm on the average gala raceday, and that the Hothouse and AMPR teams still throw the classiest parties in town with a convivial balance of well-behaved celebrities, sociable VIPs, Insta-girls, boys and the odd flambouyant eccentric.
