Zero was made by Dr.Wily, but during creation he wouldn’t boot up due to complications. Dr.Wily was becoming old, weak, and, tired, but he couldn’t give up so soon. Even with the news of Rock Disappearing from the world he wanted to be prepared for his return. What he ended up doing was trapping a grieving/exhausted Bass and forced him to give up his “life” reserves to Zero and promptly leaving Bass’s body in an abandoned Wily fortress.
Zero was wild and feral in his programming which is what Dr.Wily wanted, but in order to keep him obedient to his commands he enforced a blue head crystal with a faint W inside it. The crystal would glow when Zero went out of line which was….All the time, releasing a code that was suppose to cause excruciating amounts of pain, what Wily didn’t realized that this also corrupted the mind. Not surprisingly, this plan ultimately failed due to Zero becoming use to the pain and in a fit of rage he kills Wily.
Wily had suspected that if anything were to happen to him during Zero’s progress he were to be locked up in the lab, the capsule would proceed to open and cords would force Zero inside and put him into a stasis.
Taking this quick part from the Wiki, Decades later Zero is found, Zero kills reploids that come into the lab, Zero and Sigma fight and he looses.
Okay back to headcanon, Sigma in order to stop Zero, punches the crystal which contains the Maverick Virus. I always hated the idea that both Zero and the Virus were separate, I like the idea more that Zero was the original host and the reason for his coldness and detachment for others was because he carries the whole guilt of thousands of lives he took for just existing.
But for about two years there was no symptoms, everything was fine. Zero climbed the Ranks with ease and earned almost everyone’s respect. Then Zero finally met X, something about X clicked within his mind. Someone that felt familiar even though he’s never met him before…This then begins to develop into the spiral that is the first X game.
