「患者さんに命の危険がある場合には足を切断して出すとか、最悪の事態も、一瞬、頭の中によぎりました」（高野医師） こう振り返った高野さんが真っ先に心配したのは「クラッシュ症候群」。

長時間、圧迫された足に毒性の物質がたまり、救出されたあと全身に回るもので、過去の災害でも、たびたび死者が出ています。

足を切断して救出しないと、命が助からない可能性もあると考えたのです。

高野さんのように災害現場に入り、被災者の命を救う医師は、「ＤＭＡＴ」に所属しています。

「Disaster Medical Assistance Team」 ＝「災害派遣医療チーム」の略で、災害現場で活動する専門的な訓練を受けた医師らのチームです。
