Bobby’s Cellar, Mercenary, Criminal Underworld lore
I will make a separate post when Dante is still Tony. I will not cover what happened to Dante’s closest family. Just his mercenary life. Bobby’s Cellar (now Grue’s Cellar) is located in downtown back alley. Where a warning sign you can read is “Go Home, take a dump, and sleep it off” (DMC1 novel) or “Go home, wake up and sleep” (Before the Nightmare) was carved on the door
- a dive bar, acting a hub for information brokers and mercenaries
- “He meant after braving the smell of garbage, downing a few beers, and maybe scarfing a meal at his little establishment. Low prices and unsavory hours kept the punters coming. Constant brawls and the occasional gunshot sometimes sent them right back out” - Agents and middlemen jockeyed for contractors, relying on words or fists to land a mercenary for the night. The higher the reward, the fewer words and the more fists - The middlemen would pursue a specific mercenary instead of advertising the job - The nature of the industry.. Only those contractors with real power climbed the ladder, and notorious mercenaries rarely had to look for work. - Agents: a daily rotation that ensured each middleman got a fair crack at the action. The shuffle also kept the work on offer fresh; each agent had his own specialty and client roster - Enzo: is the best informant and a Tuesday man
Mercenary lore: - The rear was always the most dangerous part of a caravan. - To claim the reward, you only need the head - Abandoning a job under overwhelming odds was the mercenary way - Outsiders saw them as little better than criminals, while the underworld considered them untrustworthy - Back then, mercenaries will slaughter anyone without regard for taboos or self-restraint until, majority of the mercenaries were influenced by Tony’s “unnecessary killing isn’t cool”, who had revolutionized the freelance underworld by popularizing mercy. His success had shamed those who enjoyed violence and death. - Because of Gilver’s reputation.. Mercenaries sees this as an opportunity that malevolent destruction came back just like the glory days before Tony arrive. This inspired certain professional killers who considered their work more like a hobby. Criminal Underworld/ Underworld: Fondo Brown - “The client is a South African mafia leader who's being targeted by the law and is facing ruin. He wants someone to smuggle him out of the country before he's caught.” “What do you expect? This guy is a black-hearted bastard. Is organization traffics drugs. He's made a boatload of money, and a lot of people want a slice.” - Enzo - “The feds are breaking up his operation. Brown's high up in the Collosseo family. It's pretty weak as far as mafia goes, but they have inroads to the hallucinogenic drug trade” - Grue
Two incidents happen in DMC1 novel: The Oz Club incident, and the Mafiosi Massacre were done by Gilver
Oz Club: - comprised of former underworld members. - They paid a fee to participate in human hunting expeditions to avenge other members' deaths. - The first person to produce the target's head would claim the full reward - The reason why Tony/Dante spared “Mad Dog” Denvers on 99 occassions to avoid the club’s wrath - They usually attacked without warning, and negotiation was impossible Mafiosi Massacre: - Mafiosi are renowned for their marksmanship – were useless without their weapon - Gilver slaughtered 50 people with only a sword
DMC2 Novel:
Chen/ Chen the Cannibal/ Cold-blooded Chen - the primary antagonist of the DMC2 novel - secured control of the Family at his father's untimely death - his tendency to ignore all sense of morality, custom, or taboo where money was concerned. - He had amassed a generous fortune at the expense of countless lives. - He had risen to take control of the criminal underworld in recent years, making a number of enemies and an even greater number of fearful underlings. - has a research facility embedded into his mansion. An institution that specializes on demon research - synthesized his first Ghost Knight - had tasked a team of occult experts to comb the documents for hidden knowledge and memorized every last fragment, not letting a single world slip from his memory - He'd envisioned harnessing the Beasthead's power to become immortal and to assume complete mastery of the demon world - experimented on himself until he became 70% demon
