The Ferrymen
So, in my game, the SGM happened in 1999. It was a pretty big clusterfuck, to say the least. And one thing that's changed in Stygian society is that the Ferrymen really haven't been seen since. That's actually okay for the Hierarchy, as the Ferrymen were basically demigods preaching the Transcendence Heresy, not to mention occasionally threatening to replace the whole government. Plus, many blame the Ferrymen for stretching the armies so thin when they encouraged the attack on Enoch. So the Hierarchy are well rid of that nuisance. If they miss the protection Ferrymen could offer, they don't say so out loud.In the 15 years since the Maelstrom, the Hierarchy has perpetuated the belief that the Ferrymen all perished battling Spectres (some well-informed Restless use the term Pasiphae behind closed doors) during the SGM. Only a few incidences have threatened this rumor.
Firstly, there are the rumored sightings of Nicholas, the Ferryman conductor of the Midnight Express. While the train derailed during the SGM and was never seen again, some Wraiths say they have encountered him in the Tempest, searching for the cars of his train. Supposedly, after the destruction of a hospital caused a small Maelstrom in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2011 (DMP1), three cars of the train were launched out towards a small circle of Enfants and Lemures. These Restless hid inside the train until the Maelstrom ended, at which point Nicholas came, took the train, and guided them to a safer location. As the train was never seen by anyone else, this rumor has been discounted.
Still, most people didn't believe in the existence of Ferrymen until one apparently walked into Williamsburg (DMP2). The Ferryman was John Galt (no, not THAT one, I'm talking about the much more interesting historical figure). Galt apparently had no Shadow, and considering his history before as a Pardoner and Usurer harboring pro-Transcendence opinions, few doubted Galt's commitment to the Ferryman cause; he was obviously cut from the right cloth. However, some details of Galt's history as a Wraith didn't add up. One brave Circle gained aid from a group of Doomslayers and a supposed Mnemoi (more on that later) and eventually exposed Galt as a particularly ingenious Nephwrack: Cryptkicker. The Spectre had actually developed a power similar to Puppetry that had allowed it to ride a Drone, effectively masking the trace of Oblivion (as Drones lack all Passions, even dark ones). The Hierarchy suddenly had a new weapon to suppress any Ferryman rumors: it could just claim any supposed Ferrymen were Nephwracks in disguise.
Yet few who know the ways of the Ferrymen can deny the third sign. On the maiden voyage of the new Hierarchy cruiser, the Boomtown (more on that later), it was besieged by a flight of Spectres led by a Pasiphae (DMP3). While many would not know what such a thing is, those that do know this means at least one Ferryman must have survived too. So far, this information is being suppressed. However, at least one Williamsburg Marshall of the Pauper's Legion is quietly investigating any sighting he can. What he plans to do with that information is anyone's guess.
But my next game will have more time to explore this, and that means explore it I will. So I end this history with a teaser:
Very soon, the Midnight Express will ride again...
