DNA COMEDY & UCB PRESENT AFFIRMATIVE REACTION: A DANCE COMEDY SHOW
NEW YORK CITY - Brooklyn-based comedy collective DNA COMEDY has been selected to premiere their half-hour sketch comedy special AFFIRMATIVE REACTION: A Dance Comedy Show at Upright Citizen Brigade’s (UCB) Chelsea theater on March 31, 2014 at 6:30pm.
Inspired by the TV show In Living Color, AFFIRMATIVE REACTION: A Dance Comedy Show is a live comedy special of NYC actors, improvisers and dancers using satirical skits to poke holes in contemporary concepts of race and gender with elements of twerktastic dancing.
DNA Comedy founder Denae Hannah explains, "Funny and frivolous are often equated but you can be really serious and seriously funny. That duality in my personality emerges in my DNA Comedy creations when I address a serious issue like racial microaggressions with a funny idea like Urban Wear Friday.”
DNA Comedy, a collective of 18 performers and writers led by Denae Hannah, was selected in February for this highly competitive slot in the UCB Spank Series. Upright Citizens Brigade is one of the nation’s most well recognized comedy schools known producing successful comedic talent. The Spank Series selects promising new sketch shows and they are performed for one night only in consideration for an extended run at the UCB Theater.
Ms. Hannah, a recipient of the UCB Diversity Scholarship, is looking to join the legacy of successful black artists in comedy. UCB awards scholarships to underrepresented students with a passion and love for comedy, and the lack of black women in comedy is an especially hot issue after Saturday Night Live’s recent talent search. While new to sketch comedy, Ms. Hannah is not new to producing. She has scouted an energetic cast of performers from UCB, The PIT and Second City as well as professional dancers and the arts activists to create this fun, progressive show.
The show begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and reservations are made on the UCB website: http://newyork.ucbtheatre.com/performances/view/31409
