chapter one: 2005, the start of an era (pt3)

“you’re MOVING?!”

joe had rushed back upstairs the second he heard the news. what the hell? why didn’t she tell him? it wasn’t possible. no.

he chucked the chips onto his bed and stared at her, shocked. kevin and nick turned around and stared at her, confused and a bit disappointed as to why she didn’t tell them.

“like..neighbourhoods?” nick tried to be positive. maybe she was just moving just a bit farther away from their house? “no. we’re moving to new york.” bora said so quietly that they almost didn’t hear her.

the minute she said that, joe felt his world evaporate right in front of him. she was moving. bora, his best friend, the girl he had a secret crush on since they were kids, was moving. and he might never see her again.

“when?” kevin asked her, trying to retain some sense of normalcy. “..friday.”

it was a wednesday.

“FRIDAY?!?-“ joe practically fell to his knees at this point. “you’re leaving in two days, and didn’t bother to tell us? didn’t bother to tell me?”

he hugged her again, and didn’t let go. she couldn’t leave, she couldn’t. “ill hide you in my room bambi, you can sleep on my bed, ill sleep on the floor-.”

“joe. joe shut up.” she snapped, but still held him.

“sorry.”

“this just means we have to make the most of the two days we get with you.” kev stood up, deciding to take his older brother role seriously. “besides, new york isn’t that far. we could totally visit, right Joe?”

“yeah..sure.” he mumbled, his voice muffled by her body.

the two days flew by faster than you could say “im shane gray for crying out loud!” the 3 brothers spent every minute possible with their best friend, in music studios, jumping in swimming pools, and acting like teenagers. joes favourite memory was when it was just the two of them. the group had gotten slushies and nick and kevin went home early, chortling as they imagined joe probably begging her not to leave the next day, being the typical clingy best friend he was.

the future couple sat on a bench in the park there were in, and silence fell over them, the kind of silence where they could both reflect on everything.

she turned to joe, and grabbed his hand, his fingers tightly embraced with her own.

“im gonna miss you, you know.” she had told him, looking at joe, and he couldn’t help but notice she was crying.

bora lee NEVER cried.

“like a lot, joe. i know i don’t say it much, but you’re my best friend, and you’re so important to me.”

joe burst into tears after she expressed this rare sight of affection from her.

“oh my god, come here you idiot.” she pulled him into a hug. bora lee never hugged anyone first. she never even hugged joe first.

“we won’t be apart forever, i can feel it.” joe told her.

“sure you can..”

but she allowed herself to hug him tighter, and to imagine their reunion. no matter how long it took.
