✴ ☾ DONNA SHERIDAN / @dncngqn.
* starter for @dncngqn from lucca
❛ do you recognize him? ❜ she’s still confused about how everyone else knew he wasn’t a lawyer, that they recognized him from downton abbey and she couldn’t wrap her head around why he was still there. ❛ tell me you don’t so i don’t feel like the only one that hasn’t seen it. ❜ lucca doesn’t care that he’s an actor, she just wants someone else to make her to assure her she’s not out of place on this, that life (if nothing else) gave her a reason to be oblivious to him.
“ what was he like? —— my father. i mean, does he even know i exist? how’d you meet him? ” ( @dncngqn / sc. )
MOODBOARD #95 ;; DONNA SHERIDAN / THE DANCING QUEEN
‘ Every morning I wake up and I thank god that I don’t have some middle aged, menopausal man telling me how to run my life, you know? I’m free and I’m single and it’s .. it’s great. ‘
the young girl's mother was rather peculiar. she would never understand how you could treat your own child like she didn’t mean anything. in a way, julianne supposed it was rather good she herself was donna’s godmother, lord knows where she would have gone if she hadn’t been. “ you’re not alone, donna, you can stay here for as long as you want to ”

❛ think i’m having war flashbacks. ❜ rosie stated suddenly, before looking to her right at the blonde. ❛ you know when you’re just standing there, minding your own business and then boom you’re hit with a memory you’d much rather forget. ❜ surely donna had to know of what she was talking about. they’d shared in that horrible experience together after all. ❛ donna, honestly, what were we thinking ? who the hell accepts some strange, pretty looking pill from a man on the market street ? i mean, for christ sake it could’ve been poison. ❜
RUBY SHERIDAN : HEADCANONS 002 : DONNA
Ruby never saw herself as being a mother and probably never would’ve been good at it but being as young as she was when she had Donna she was really out of her depth which is something she’s always felt guilty about. In the early days she considered giving Donna up for adoption to give her a better shot with someone who might actually be good at the whole parenting gig but she couldn’t bring herself to do it - whether it was because Donna was all she had left of Fernando or whether it was the one maternal bone in her body that refused to give her up, Ruby still doesn’t know.
When Ruby first found out she was pregnant, she knew immediately she was going to have a girl and the very first name she settled on was Valentina Cienfuegos because she thought it was a name Fernando would like. As the months went on though and their daughter was born with still no sign of Fernando she chose Donna Valentina Sheridan instead, deciding that if she was to be on her own in raising her, her daughter should carry her name.
Ruby named donna after Donna Reed, her favourite actress as a child - as time went on though she met more and more people who had no idea who that was and being too lazy to give them a history lesson she started telling people she named her after Donna Summer instead.
Ruby fell in love with Donna the moment she saw her, though she’d admit she was confused when she turned out blonde and may have been concerned for a minute that there was a mix up but she soon realised, she looks just like Ruby’s mother, Siobhan. Their estrangement being what it is, this bothers her every now and then.
She was technically a single mother but she had a lot of help with Donna and often left her backstage with managers or dancers she trusted who would help her with her homework etc.
When she could get donna to wear them, she used to dress her to match her own outfits when they went out.
On the nights she was able to stay at home with her, Ruby used to read Donna stories to help her sleep but they both got bored with the traditional ones pretty quick so Ruby used to just make up stories on the spot, letting Donna pick the setting and the characters names and make additions as they went along.
Some of the days Ruby remembers most fondly are her multiple wedding days, not for the traditional reasons but because after she freaked out and ran, she and Donna would spend the day together in their fancy dresses. Ruby would take her to get ice cream and then they’d go to the park or the circus or whatever was close by that looked fun to take their minds off it. Once she even had the photographer meet them and they had their own little photoshoot on a carousel. Ruby still keeps the pictures from that day framed in her bedroom.
Despite the amount of times she’s been engaged, no man has ever moved in with the Sheridans. It was always just the two of them, though sometimes Ruby’s assistant would stay with them for a few weeks. Ruby’s motto was always ‘It’s you and me first’ when it came to Donna and she never wanted to risk moving someone in and Donna not liking them. It was one of the reasons she never went through with any of her marriages.
Whenever Ruby was happy or there was something to celebrate, the Sheridan house would turn into a two person dance concert, music blasting in the background with the two of them singing along - more often than not to Elvis
Ruby always hated school and never viewed it as important because she knew she wanted to be a singer and didn’t think they had anything to teach her, she dropped out at sixteen and never looked back. Donna being good in school always surprised her especially since she never necessarily encouraged her to do homework etc, but she was always really proud of her for it though she rarely said as much.
Ruby really loves her daughter’s voice and while they don’t sound particularly similar, she’s sure Donna got her talent from her and it’s the one thing she’s really happy to have passed down. She also loves when Donna does her songs and in her teen years helped her alter a few to better fit her range.
Quite a few of Ruby’s songs were written for Donna or with her in mind whether or not she knows it, most of which having been written after they stopped talking in an attempt to reach out. Those songs include : I’ll Never Stop Loving You, The Way Of Love, Sunny, Love Hurts, Turn Around & I Hope You Find It
The reason Ruby snapped and told Donna not to call her again when she told her she was pregnant was because she was scared for her. Being a single mother in the 60s was hard and especially in the industry she was in ( the same industry she assumed Donna would go into eventually with her talent ) and Ruby had always wanted better for Donna. With her going to Oxford especially, she had this picture of how great her daughter’s life would be and how much easier it would be than her own and in three words that whole picture was shattered. All the sacrifices she’d made felt in vein because Donna was about to repeat her life all over. The thought of it was overwhelming and Ruby almost had an anxiety attack when she hung up but she didn't mean what she said and she always assumed Donna would’ve figured that out and called back. Calling Donna herself seemed like losing and she was always too stubborn for that but she did send Donna a check for about eight thousand dollars every month hoping to make her life easier. Donna never cashed any which lead Ruby to believe she didn't want anything to do with her. She kept sending checks just in case but she never tried to bother her in any other way.
The way she handled that situation has remained her biggest regret for over twenty years.
