It's my favorite boy's birthday today, and it also happens to be the two-year anniversary of his campaign debut. Since almost all of my edits of him so far have involved him being absolutely miserable, I decided it was time to make something a little sillier. And since it's May, I figured why not make him a merman?
Happy birthday, my beloved idiot bastard man. I'm sorry for what I've done to you and what I will do to you in the future. Thank you for saving me. I don't know where I'd be without you. 💖
(A million thanks to @intramoon for helping me get the rain and stormy sky textures.)
lyrics plain text:
Sailing on a ship in a bottle
Anchor all your thoughts to the bottom
Pulling ropes and pulling your head back
To see what is breaking the foremast
You set sail alone, there is no crew
No one on the deck who can help you
This is all your own battle to win
This is your ship, and you are the captain
...
Oh, captain, make up your mind
Before the salt burns your eyes and you run out of time
'Cause you're popping the cork, you get lost in your brain
And you lose touch with all the things that made you feel sane
I really could have just put the entire lyrics of Ship in a Bottle on here, because every bit of them are applicable to Rook and his current place in the story. I've loved this song for years and I was dying to put it on Rook's playlist. Now that he's gone through emotional hell and is about to be named captain of the Tide Breaker, I finally can.
(I swear he is actually in a bottle. I want to do a render that shows that better, but I haven't figured out how best to do that yet.)
The world faded into a blur as Rook plunged blindly into the darkness of the labs. He flew past countless doors, taking turns at random. Some dim part of his mind was aware that this was foolish, that he might be running towards more monsters. Towards his death. Most of him didn’t care. Maybe if he died, he would wake up from this nightmare.
After a while his boots’ magic faded. His speed slowed to a crawl, and he stumbled. His foot caught on a fungal root and he tipped forwards, slamming into the ground. As he sat up and looked around, Rook knew he was far, far from the room where he’d started. Good, he thought, the party won’t be able to find me.
I've always thought that this scene (which was nearly a year ago now, holy shit) from Rook's campaign would make a really cool render. But I didn't really have a great idea for how to pull it off. And then I was browsing my game and found a bunch of fantasy plants and mushrooms by @radioactivedotcom that I apparently forgot I had, and it all starting falling into place. A little bit of blender advice from @goldenwaves set me on the right track to getting all of the plants to glow. And then I got it into photoshop, and boom!! My boy's miserable day came to life! I'm pretty damn happy with how it came out, actually.
(Caption Plaintext: "Please don't find me, I'm not okay")
“I should have known that it was only a matter of time before she found me again. I’ll end up dead, or back in her hold. I can’t decide which is worse.”
Still didn't find a setup I liked better, but the DM needed a chapter banner, so I edited this really fast. Maybe someday I'll make the perfect render to show this thing off from the outside...
