this fucking book i tried to read, autonomous by annalee newitz. it's supposed to be an adult sci-fi book about some serious topics. i’m led to believe this is good, and that it’s not a creepy pseudo romance novel. i was lied to

there's some cringe writing but i'm willing to gloss over the mediocre writing style

oh my god this is a grown woman who is a pirate and just killed a man she 'pulled out some 420' what kind of how do you do fellow kids shit is this

also it does the stupid “every continent is its own country” and the Country of Europe is called....~the eurozone~. finding it hard to believe this isn’t a comedy at this point

i rolled my eyes but against my better judgement decided to keep reading and just two chapters later

who made the decision to publish this shit??

a grown adult who has been published before chose to describe an emaciated former slave - who is currently propositioning a woman - as.............’looking like a yaoi character’. because he’s young and asian and has hair, i guess? 

not to mention all the horrifying moral implications of her being hunky-dory with him “thanking” her for ‘freeing’ him and her brushing aside the obvious problems there with “are you sure?”

...did i mention this lady’s 50 and he’s 20?

VamillePudding’s fics are the perfect length for cracky fluff (10-20k). the only fics over 150k that I liked are nature and nurture (which I’ve read three times now... it is my gold standard for kid fics) and that merlin military one that’s a series in total of 1.2 million words that I’ve tried and failed to complete three times (I think I made it to 600k in on my last attempt???)
