4. Most overrated classic book?

I have read To Kill a Mockingbird twice and still don’t understand what the fuss is about.

9. Do you finish books no matter what, and if not, what makes you quit?

I definitely quit books, usually because something about them isn’t holding my interest. This year alone, I’ve quit for writing style, theme, pacing, main character, sticking too close to a formula, and just plain old not connecting with anything after getting a quarter through.

18. Favorite and least favorite books read for high school classes?

Favourite: The Chrysalids

Least favourite: Lord of the Flies

24. Favorite book title?

I don’t think I have a favourite, but I do like the poetic titles that make sense only once you’ve read the book. Stuff like Of Blood and Honey and Every Heart a Doorway.

DNFing Dread Nation. Just wasn’t feeling it. This does not bode well for my reading year.

I don't know if you've answered this somewhere but how long do you give a book a chance to entertain you before you DNF it? Or do you just finish it? If you DNF, do you return back to the store if you still have the receipt?

I generally give a book about 70 pages or a day’s reading, which is often about the same. That’s enough time for me to get a good sense of the writing and the plot and the characters, and to gauge whether I’m really willing to keep going if I’m on the fence. I finish a lot but not everything. I’ve already DNFed one book this year for being a fraction on the wrong side of average.

I don’t actually buy most of my books, so the return-for-refund rarely happens. I’m reading more library books these days, so if I quit one of those, it goes in the pile for Library Day. My work is also lovely in that they let us loan out the stock (like in a library) and since I’m there pretty much every day, I’ll just take my hold off it and shelve the book again. :) When that happens, I usually tell my coworkers why I didn’t like it, too.
