Pairing: king! do kyungsoo x reader
Summary: “I promised my heart, my soul, my everything to you and you only.”
“I hope he enjoys the sweets I made.”
With a bounce in your steps, you headed towards Kyungsoo’s office. While he said you could enter anytime without being considered a bother, you still worried about interrupting. He was the king after all. He had lots to do to keep this country thriving.
Standing in front of the double doors, you lightly knocked before he called you inside. You walked in with your tray to find him talking with two of his generals, Jongin and Sehun. Their conversations abruptly stopped as their heads turned to the intruder. Their faces lit up at the sight of you while a smile grew on the king’s lips.
“Am I interrupting?” You fussed, making the three of them look at each other and laugh.
“Not at all,” Sehun assured you.
You bit your lip, still unsure. “Are you sure?”
“Y/N, we love having you here. It lets us rest, and catch up with the busy bee of the castle,” Jongin teased you with the nickname. You rolled your eyes, and chuckled. Though, what they said did make you feel a bit better, and more relaxed. You smiled, thankful for the both of them. Then, your eyes averted to your king, and he nodded.
“You can know you can come in anytime, Y/N.”
“I know, but I still don’t want to interrupt,” You sighed, setting the tray of sweets on the table. They let out a gasp, admiring your work before asking for a bite. You nodded, and waved for them to do so. “I was practicing all morning, so I hope they taste good.”
After a bite, Sehun and Jongin gave thumbs up, and Kyungsoo hummed in approval. You smiled.
“I’m glad they turned out well.”
“Practice definitely paid off,” Sehun praised.
“I wouldn’t mind starting everyday with your sweets,” Jongin added.
All of their sweet words were making your cheeks grow a shade of red. You mumbled a shy thank you as your hands went up to cover them.
Instantly, the two generals cooed at you, which only made your face contort into an even more adorable expression. Your eyebrows knitted together. What were they up to?
“Look at how cute our Y/N is. Why does anyone dare to take you away from Y/N?” Sehun thought out loud before his eyes widened. He froze in his spot as he slowly turned his head to meet his king’s gaze. Kyungsoo was anything but happy. Meanwhile, Jongin was shaking his head at his friend.
As soon as the words left his mouth, Sehun knew he was dead. He had let the details of the meeting slip to the one person that wasn’t supposed to find out this way. Kyungsoo was going to tell you everything in private, but it was too late now.
“Our king got a marriage proposal from an allied country of ours just days ago.”
Your eyes flickered to Kyungsoo, then back to the two generals.
“Is that so? How wonderful.” But your voice betrayed you, and your face showed everything you were feeling. “I um should go. Seems like you’re really busy talking about important things.”
You backed away, nearly falling back onto the floor lamp on your way out. Kyungsoo watched with his mouth slightly agape, unsure of what to say but your name.
“I’ll see you later!” Finally being locating the doors, you darted out of the room and down the hall. The king let out a sigh, burying his face into his hands. He didn’t have the chance to explain anything. Sehun offered an innocent smile when Jongin gave him a tired look.
“Now Y/N misunderstands the whole situation.”
“Yes, but it’ll be interesting to see what Y/N does with this information.”
“Well, knowing how Y/N can get when it comes to Kyungsoo, perhaps.”
Shaking his head, Kyungsoo pushed himself off the chair. Then, he walked towards the door, his cape swaying behind his powerful stature.
“I shall go check on Y/N. Please have the maids prepare for their arrival.”
“And do be sure not to cause anymore trouble.”
With his last warning, the door shut behind the king.
Worried, Kyungsoo hurried towards your room. When he saw that look on your face, it broke his heart. He knew this was going to take a big toll on you. Sure, you may have put on a brave face in front of everyone. You were strong willed after all. You had no problem fighting back against anything that headed your way. But when it came to these kinds of things, that was when your mask fell away, and your heart revealed itself. You were an open book.
Reaching your door, he lightly knocked. Faint footsteps padded to the door, and it opened a little for you to peek through. Upon seeing him, you gulped and put on your best smile. But he knew you all too well.
“Kyungsoo. I uh thought you were with Jongin, and Sehun. What are you doing here?” You awkwardly laughed. You couldn’t have him coming in. You needed time to collect yourself, so you don’t worry him. Though, it seemed he already was, judging from the pained look on his face.
“I’m here to see you. May I come in?”
The door opened wider, and allowed for him to fully come inside. You followed him to the bed, and sat down. He took your hand in his, and looked up at you.
“Do you want to talk about it?” He asked in a gentle voice.
“About why you’re upset.”
He observed you, then softly spoke. “You know, if you don’t like it, I don’t have to meet with the suitor.”
You shake your head, biting back tears to show a brave face. “It’s for the sake of the country. I understand.”
“Y/N.” His eyebrows knitted together in confusion, and agony. He didn’t want to hurt you.
“Kyungsoo, please. It’s okay, so meet with the person.”
Still hesitant, he only nodded.
You pulled your hands away from his to straighten out his uniform before laying your hands on his chest. You gave him a gentle smile, reassuring him one last time that you were all right.
How long were you going to be able to keep up this facade though?
A few days passed, and the suitor and the king had come to visit. You peeked inside the dining hall, oblivious to the harsh grip you had on the door frame. Though, there was someone who did notice, and that was the cook.
“Y/N, you’re going to break the door if you squeeze any harder.”
“Ah, right.” You quickly let go as he let out a sigh.
“If you’re that upset about this whole ordeal, I don’t get why you didn’t just tell him.”
“Because I’m not that kind of person. I’m not going to be some overly jealous partners like others do.” You argued. “And I trust Kyungsoo, completely.”
The cook grinned at the love struck person.
“Which is why I know you know he has control of the situation. He will have this fixed in no time, and the two of you can live happily ever after.”
“That part sounded like you were mocking me.”
“Just stating how you should be more open with Kyungsoo about how you feel instead of being like this.” He waved you off, and you stuck your tongue at him. He laughed. He did have a point though.
After lunch, the allied king had ushered the two royalties out to the garden to take a walk. You were going to walk away before this could upset you anymore until the cook brewed up a plan.
Now, somehow you were their escort as they walked around the beautifully kept garden. You walked a couple feet behind them, watching them in all of their glory.
Adorned in the finest clothing, and shiniest jewelry, hair styled to perfection, it was if the suitor was a walking piece of art. The way they carried themselves showed sophistication, grace, and beauty.
Your king wasn’t any different. His stature showed power, and strength as he walked. His looks were truly out of this world, making him the most handsome throughout the land.
Seeing them together showed a completely different masterpiece. One that was too beautiful, and untouchable.
It hurt your heart. This hurt too much. But you kept it inside, and wore a smile to stop your king from worrying.
“These flowers are all so beautiful, Kyungsoo.” Even the way they called his name was so elegant.
They looked over to your king, and smiled. It was that look. A look of so much love, and admiration. One you would even give to Kyungsoo when you looked at him.
It made your heart squeeze.
Suddenly, you heard ringing in your ears. All of the words shared by the two went unheard as horrible thoughts hovered in your mind. Unable to hide how you truly felt, tears of sorrow fell down your cheeks. You spun around on your heel as you tried to hide your sadness behind your hand. You couldn’t have them, especially him see you like this.
Despite your best efforts to hide everything, he knew all along how you felt. You didn’t know it, but he had been keeping a close eye on you this whole time.
Seeing the look of yearning on the king’s face, the suitor’s eyes followed along his line of sight. They softly chuckled at the situation, and elbowed Kyungsoo in the side. He frowned as he finally took his attention away from you.
“You idiot. Shouldn’t you be comforting your important person over there instead of being with me?”
The suitor smirked, and rolled their eyes. “Did you honestly believe I wouldn’t notice the way you look at that person? Who I must say is just the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.”
Kyungsoo softly smiled, pride lacing his smile and his cheeks turning a rosy red.
“Y/N L/N, you say?” They hummed, testing it out. Then, they nodded as a sign of approval. “I’m glad, Kyungsoo. I hope you two make each other happy for all eternity.”
“Y/N already does everyday,” He said fondly, making them chuckle.
You didn’t dare look at them anymore. They made a beautiful couple with their radiating smiles, and presence. You didn’t feel you were worthy enough to be there with them.
That was when you ran. Far, far away from the royal couple.
At your sudden disappearance, it caught Kyungsoo’s attention almost immediately. He knew he should chase after you, but what to do or say to explain the situation. Turning back around to his companion, they chuckled. With an elegant wave of the hand, they sent him on his way.
“Go after Y/N, you fool.”
The king ran as fast as he could to catch up to his partner. He needed to explain everything, resolve the misunderstanding you had about them. He should’ve done so before feelings became a tangled mess.
“Y/N!” He called out to you when he spotted you around the corner. You let out a gasp, and picked up the pace. But him being more trained than you, he managed to catch your wrist. You were both panting as he pinned you against your wrists to the wall, his hands on either side of your head.
“J-Just give me a second.” You turned your head to put on your best smile for him, but the image of the couple kept playing over and over in your head. It stopped your smile from ever appearing.
He softly smiled, leaning forward to kiss your cheek as if to kiss your tears away before they fell. When he pulled away, he admired every detail of your face.
“Do you think I don’t know you well enough to see when you’re upset?”
Your bottom lip quivered no matter how hard you tried to hold back your tears. With a squeeze of his reassuring hand, you finally broke. Tears stained your cheeks as you chuckled, embarrassed.
“Aren’t I stupid for getting upset about something like this?”
“Not at all. If you had told me you didn’t like it, I wouldn’t have met with the suitor.”
You shake your head, pulling your wrist away from his grip to wipe away your tears.
“No, no. This marriage was important for the country, and your image as king.”
He raised an eyebrow. Since when have you cared so much about his status as king? He thought the two of you were long past that.
“And I’m sure this marriage was set up by your parents when they wore the crown, huh? So, not much could’ve been done to stop this anyway.”
Frustrated by your strange behaviors and words, he was fed up. He pulled you to him, and captured your lips in a kiss. Dazed when he pulled away, you were at a loss of words. That was when he decided to explain everything.
“That suitor, my love, is a long time friend of mine.” He watched you slowly realize what he meant. He smiled with amusement, then laughed at the look of surprise appeared on your face.
“Kyungsoo! Why didn’t you just tell me?”
“I wanted to be a little mean.”
He apologized with another kiss, but your bottom lip jutted out at the unraveling of his true plan. Despite finding out the true meaning of today, your heart couldn’t help but skip a beat at the fond look in his eyes. A small smile danced across his lips as he leaned his forehead against yours. He rubbed your noses together, making you give in a little. Who wouldn’t when the all mighty king softened just for you.
“I will tell you this, my love, so listen carefully.”
He then held up his pinkie to which you hooked yours around.
“I promised my heart, my soul, my everything to you and you only a long time ago, didn’t I?”
Your cheeks burned a crimson red, being caught off guard by the sweet words. That twinkle in your eyes made its way back, and you grinned.
“And it shall remain that way for all eternity.”
