Yes, it does depend a lot on the circumstance. I was speaking mostly if there wasn't any pressing events occurring when he gets the news. Obviously when an enemy hurts the ones he loves Hiccup is going to fight back. He's not anti-violent. In the movie, he killed the Red Death because it was threatening his people. Hiccup would do the same with anyone who attacks his friends. And yet that still doesn't make Hiccup a vindicative person, nor does it make him choose violence as the first route of options. Hiccup is a very complex personality, which is what makes him unique, and which is what makes his characterization very specific and nuanced.
