So maybe I should make an intro post! 👋 Hi I'm Glory or Indigo (they/them), longtime Tumblr user and fandom enthusiast.

TMA has made me so much happier in so many ways since I started listening to it, and has quite possibly altered my brain chemistry and the trajectory of my life (not what I was expecting when I started listening to the funky horror fiction podcast my roommate recommended to me, but here we are), so I wanted to extend a thanks to you and everyone else who worked on the show for creating such a phenomenal work.

One of the things I loved most about listening was how much fun everyone was having and how close you all seemed in bonus content/qnas/etc.. Creative work, especially writing, has always been very solitary for me, and though that's nice at times! it can be disheartening, too.

I'm starting at university in the fall, and I'm really hoping to change that, so... Any advice on making friends/building community/starting collaborative projects when it comes to creative work?

Hey, Lovely to hear and I am happy to be your well meaning but slightly out of touch uncle for the topic. Advice for making a creative community at University: 1) Buy a door stop. If you are staying on campus prop your door open the day you move in. People will wander corridors of closed fire doors looking to meet people. Yours will be the open door and you can immediately turn your room into a social hub/ point of reference. 2) Join every society that even vaguely tickles your interest (unless they expect major fees/dues up front in which case be more reserved). Attend them all at first then let them atrophy naturally. The stuff you actually want to do will rise to the top and the rest will drop off. You'll be left with a broader palette of contacts and interests. 3) Befriend the STEM nerds. Every gang of engineers is looking for a fun humanities pet and most of those groups will have at least one person who secretly wishes they were doing something creative. That will be your go-to tech person in the future, I guarantee it. 4) Do a sport but don't let it consume your time. Not just good for your health, it will pair you with people you wouldn't normally meet and give a schema of shared interest to make convo easier. This is where you are most likely to meet your wild-card contact (i.e. someone you couldn't ever plan to meet who turns out to be essential due to their connections or whatever.) 5) Learn hard skills. Lighting, sound, electronics etc. This is the easiest time you have to get these skills and having them immediately makes you more resilient as a creator both financially and in terms of insight moving forwards. 6) Accept as much useful responsibility as you can easily handle. i.e. being a visual artist who is secretary of the Art Club = useful and helpful. Being a visual artist who is a treasurer for the cocktail society = less so. Some responsibility is important but remember there is an opportunity cost. Every position of responsibility you take precludes you from another. So choose them don't just drift into them. Bonus: Don't shave your head for a performance role 2 weeks into semester. No-one will recognise you and everyone will avoid you. TRUST ME. As always, your mileage may vary. I am a neurospicy bunny who made a personal study of how to socialise like a human, I am NOT an expert, guru or trained proffesional in this field.

Martin Blackwood propaganda:

Had the WORST parents. he needs new ones. For context, his father abandoned him and his mother when he was about 8, and he doesn't remember much about him. His mother hated him because Martin reminded her of his father and looks incredibly similar to him. Martin even dropped out of school to care for her when she was ill, but she opted to move into a nursing home and doesn't want to see Martin at all.

He needs new parents desperately. Therefore, adoptable.

Second of all, he pined over his boss (who HATED him at the beginning of the show) for 4 seasons of Magnus Archives. He also gave Jon tea. Martin is a squishy boy and needs protection. BUT ANYWAYS. Jon eventually came around for him, so yay :D they got together.

Obviously makes him more adoptable

Thirdly, he's also murderous. Kinda. When given the chance, he wants to kill as many people who harmed him, Jon, or his friends, or are just horrible people. He has strong morals and opinions, and is a character with a lot of depth.

Multi-faceted characters are just better, therefore more adoptable.

Finally, the whole fandom wants to adopt him. As evidence, here is the amount of fics written when he finally gets a chance to be happy

OK I'm cracking out the math.

In MAG 56, Martin says he's 29. This aired March 16, 2017. So back tracking, Martin's birthday is either late 1987 or early 1988.

Jon's birthday recording in MAG 161 happened around the start of the show (Jon says it's been "a rough start" with the team) so that puts the birthday party probably after March 24, 2016 (the airdate of MAG 1).

Jon was a child of the 90s (MAG 81), but he claimed he was turning 38 in the birthday party. If that were true, Jon would have been born around 1978, which is a lie.

So Jon lied about his age and upped it a whole decade (a quick and easy knee-jerk response to cover the fact he feels so inexperienced and out of his depth). So he's turning 28 at the bday party around the start of season 1. So his birth year has to be very similar to Martin's.

However, we know that Jon was there for Martin's birthday near the start of his tenure (as he said during the birthday party flashback in MAG 161).

Therefore, Jon's birthday has to be later in the year than Martin's. What I think we know for sure is that Martin's birthday has to occur after March 2016, and Jon's has to occur sometime after.

I came up with my headcanons for their birthdays long before I got to the birthday party flashback episode, but I think they still track! I heacanon Martin's birthday to be on June 25, 1987, a Cancer and pride month baby. And Jon's is on Oct 23, 1987, a Scorpio and spooky baby. Reasoning for my zodiac choices:

• Cancer: caring and providing/selfless, needing connection to find identity, and is capable of manipulating emotion as much as offering emotional empathy generously • Scorpio: stubborn, restrains their own feelings, thrives in the dark of the psyche, hides sensitive center, emotions roll in like waves, depressive from diving too deep

@inhonoredglory I love all the analysis you've done :D I'm totally with you on Martin being a Cancer, although I personally hc Jon as a Virgo - very neat, obsessed with keeping things in order and following procedure, a bit distant emotionally.

Mind you, I'm not trying to argue with you or invalidate your proposal! This is just my personal take and neither of us really has an upper ground here :)

Genuinely curious - how did you arrive at the exact dates (25th and 23rd)? :)

I love hearing about other people's zodiac takes!! Honestly I'm very new to the zodiac so I just perused other people's experiences with fellow signs to see how much they vibe. And I definitely was casting Jon based on his later-season self when some of his walls came down, in particular the stubbornness and prickly hedgehog vibes that protects a sensitive center. But I was hella projecting on him too, so 😅. Virgo definitely feels like him a lot!

Speaking of projection, that's how I came up with the specific dates. There really isn't much information to work off of in the show for the days, so they're all based on personal milestones with the character for me. If you're interested, Martin's is based off when I really started loving him as a character (on a 25th of a month) when I first heard the s4 trailer. Jon's is even more personal, as the month of October and Oct 23 in particular is a special milestone for me in terms of finding my true self (outside of the one my upbringing tried to make me), and I relate quite deeply to both Jon and to Scorpio. So giving him the 23rd as a birthday was a way of gifting to him something of myself, because I love him a lot.

sometimes I just like to think about Elias sitting in his office and making his little Archivist plans. obviously choosing Jon is a no-brainer because Jon already has a Web mark and that's the hardest one to manipulate into happening

and Jon asks for Tim and Sasha, which okay, fine, Tim's an explosion waiting to happen and Sasha's good cannon fodder if nothing else. but Jon likes and respects them both so they're not really going to create the atmosphere of anxiety and fury that Elias very much wants his new Archivist to be suffering from the get go. so whomst to choose?

Martin has got used to life in the library and just isn't pumping out that good good CV related terror any more because he's pretty confident now that he can actually do the job. but put him down in a whole new position and he's going to be right back where he started! terrified of being caught and going ridiculously above and beyond to try to make a good impression. and that exact anxiety and going above and beyond is going to INFURIATE Jon. plus Jon only has a bachelor's degree and Martin's CV says he has a Master's, and in a field that's actually relevant, which means that Jon's going to feel like he's starting from an incredibly inferior position relative to Martin and is going to be wildly anxious and angry about that. and when Martin reveals himself to be totally incompentent... even worse! (even better from Elias's point of view)

I like to think about Elias having a huge spreadsheet of everyone in the Institute in which he scores them on how badly they'll infuriate and terrify Jon, and Martin comes out the clear winner.

and like at first it really seems to be working! Jon hates Martin! except... after the worms, why does he keep on going out to lunch with Martin despite believing him to be murderously plotting his downfall?? why would finding out that Martin lied on his CV make Jon trust Martin MORE instead of less??? WHY THE HELL IS HE FALLING IN LOVE WITH MARTIN????? this wasn't supposed to happen! Elias made a spreadsheet and everything!!!

also I think Elias totally has the hots for Martin because he reminds him of Peter and this just makes him hate Martin even more, but that's by the by
