What documentaries about awesome women would you recommend?

I love awesome women and docs about them, there are so many on my list still and so many more that need docs be made about them tbh. So if there's a particular field you're interested in, I think there's a fascinating woman in it with an interesting documentary about her.

I love the painter Hilma af Klint so the first rec is about her. Her works have fascinated me for the years and learning more about her and her thinking was just a gift - 'Beyond the Visible'; I wanted to see the doc about the first female filmmaker for the longest time and just couldn't find it anywhere but got my hands on it recently and it did not disappoint - 'Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché' (some of you might also be excited about a teeny tiny cameo of someone in it haha); another artist I love is Karen Dalton and if you like folk music you probably know about her and her impact on so many great musicians - 'Karen Dalton: In My Own Time'; if you ever enjoyed or been touched by Joan Didion's works, you might like 'Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold'; the same can be said for Anaïs Nin and her oeuvre. I liked a short doc about her process of writing from 1974 'Anaïs Nin Observed'. There's one from 1998 but I haven't watched yet but from the little excerpts I've seen it's also really interesting so you can try that as well; and another incredible writer Ursula K. Le Guin, if you love her stories 'Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin' is just so beautiful to watch (Ursula and Anaïs remind me of someone I worked with and I think I'm even more impressed with her and her life now than I already was).

Ok, I think these are some I can think of and recommend now. I'm sure I'll watch more in the future so I'll share if that's something you're interested in <3

Watch this documentary! 🌈

I watched a beautifully made documentary about a part of LGBTQ+ history on Netflix today.

If you're into that kind of stuff, I highly recommend The Circus Of Books. It made me cry, but in a not-sad-but-hopeful way. Which is a good kind of cry.

It’s been a minute since I have done a doc rec, and I’m a little late to the party on this 2020 documentary. This one isn’t about fandom or fan studies or... what I usually recommend. But you should watch it.

This short reality/documentary series by David Chang is SO thought provoking, and impactful. He is such a thoughtful, occasionally opinionated (ok - not occasionally... all the time) chef who, in this series, explores the impact of COVID on the restaurant industry, the rise of vegan “culture” and the impacts of that on sustainability and the realities of how food is produced in our society, SUSHI, breakfast foods, the future of how food is produced/distributed, etc. Anyway, have loved him for ages and wanted to share. If this is your thing.

T. rex autopsy?? what doc is this? i need to see it immediately omg!! :0

Here’s Nat Geo’s page on it! Seeing a full-sized anatomically correct T. rex laid out on the table is the stuff that dreams are made of, to be honest. The model is amazingly good. It even manages not to divert itself into silly docu-schmaltz too much!

But I will warn you, the autopsy is SUPER realistic and there is a lot of blood and gore. Don’t watch if that makes you queasy. (If you can’t stomach a show like Inside Nature’s Giants, for example, you might want to give this one a pass. Though knowing it’s all fake might help.)

The model is amazingly detailed and apparently took 6 months to build. Kudos to the design team!
