Yesterday I got to go on a tour of the main deck and quarters of the Western Flyer, a sardine boat commissioned by Ed "Doc" Ricketts and John Steinbeck to travel to the Sea of Cortez [aka the Gulf of California] in 1940. The boat was almost lost to history but with a lot of money and TLC, it will now be used around the Monterey Bay as a steward for education through the Western Flyer Foundation. It is temporarily docked in Moss Landing, but eventually will have a permanent home in Monterey. It will also make regular trips back to Washington, where it was both built and refurbished. If anyone happens to know the story about the antlers on the crow's nest, I'm very curious! All shots were taken with my Canon Rebel XS EO5.

He didn’t die in the boat, but it’s where his heart was. So he sits in the shadows and blends in with the Douglas Fir boards, the ship with the exceptional life force, the ship that outlasted her counterparts. He misses the sound of beer bottles rolling across the floor, the pile of logs, and the excitement that stretched across the vast horizon. Above it all, he misses the voice of his dearest friend, waxing philosophy and the importance of starfish. He doesn’t know why John didn’t make it back here, too. But the man always had a heart melded of the mercurial and sagacious; hopefully it was somewhere with full bottles and resembling Camelot. Maybe one day when she’s fully resurrected, he can come out of the shadows and share his stories. He’s been waiting so long and forever is a long time to be silent.

The Story of Friendship

Steinbeck's boat is being restored in Washington, and I was reading up more on Doc. Some people say you can't have a love story with a friend, but this is one if I've ever seen it. It's always bothered me that Steinbeck took Doc off as a co-author for their novel- and that he's never been put back on. I've started these short free writing prompts based off pictures I've taken or that I stumble across. I did one last night based off these two wardrobes I saw in the antique store. I really want to do one where Ed is haunting the boat. Maybe I'll do it later today.
