Fuck For Forest - Docaviv

Earlier this week there was a documentary film festival in Tel-Aviv. At first I really wasn't very excited, I hate to admit it but I, like most people I assume, start to yawn whenever I hear the word documentary. But this festival made me realize that I haven't seen enough documentaries to truly appreciate how exciting, touching, genuinely funny and satisfying they can be.

This was the first documentary I went to in the course of the festival, I was drawn to the description; an activist group that produces porno and putts their profit towards environmental causes. I am not quite sure what I expected. Probably some soft core propaganda about this obscure alternative activist group, but what I got instead is a very honest portrait of a slightly culty group of misfits. The movie employs a third person omniscient narration which completely changes the subject of the film. Instead of focusing on the cause or even really on what the group does to raise money the filmmaker focuses on each member of the group and their own reasons for joining.

What is really fascinating about the film's subjects is their motives. If this were another propaganda "save the planet film" everyone's motive would be clear and singular, but since this movie chooses to be much more complicated than that we get the real reason why people choose to join an underground activist group. The reasons span from loneliness, need for love, sex, attention, fun, not having anywhere else to go, basically unique reasons for each and every unique person; a fact that propaganda films are sure enough not willing to acknowledge. This film had genuine affection for its subjects, which I'm sure is inevitable for a documentarian who spends a year with this group of people. The filmmaker doesn't try to comment on what they are doing, or trying to do, in any way but simply and purely to show the audience who these people are, because really they are fascinating characters.

Although this movie and its director claim not to attempt to do so, this film did make me think about the environment, of course this is probably because I am always concerned, to a paranoid degree, with the environment. This is also the reason I initially wanted to watch this movie, but more than anything through the course of the film and the group's attempt to help the cause I gradually began losing hope and faith in the cause. It really isn't anything specific to this group, which I must mention actually managed to raise a lot of money, but the movie seemed to bring to light how difficult it is to spend money raised for the environment in a way that actually changes or helps our planet's current state.

Other than the cause, there is the way they raised the money, of course. I thought that the porno aspect of this film would be much more prevalent; it really wasn't. There was hardly any graphic sex scenes in the movie, and the porno they make is much more natural and (pun very much intended) organic. Some of the best scenes were of the group members going around Berlin, trying to find people who will take either naked photos or be filmed having sex in order to help the environment. One particularly memorable scene was of a Canadian girl who basically said she was game for anything and always says yes. As she takes off her shirt she says something along the lines of "I don't really think we can help the environment, don't you think we are just fucked anyways?" The members of the group nod in agreement as they begin filming her.
