Documentary filmmaking 1

The backstory to this: I’ve contemplated doing a documentary that follows some of the lesser known parts of D-Day/WWII in honor of my grandfather who was on Utah Beach. (The other beach we Americans were in charge of during D-Day and one that has been a pain in the butt to get info on.) As I move forward, I’ll be doing a live blog on the process.

That being said, here’s where I’m at thus far.

After going down the research rabbit hole, I am back at square 1. As some may know, my grandpa died 19 years before I was born. Since it’s his journey to D-Day that I’m documenting, I thought that finding people who knew him in Chicago would be a good start. The first person on the list was his girlfriend (my potential step-grandmother and sister of grandpa’s best friend) and sadly that led nowhere.

I know many WWII vets didn’t tell stories so that part of my research is probably a waste of time. I might return to the idea to find out what the rest of the family knows but for now it’s onward toward sending emails to researchers and using freelancing as the way to pay for this.

So, I will soon get my own camera which I am excited about. And I'm going to be filming meetings I have with friends about my comic over the summer. And then for my project, I was thinking of putting all of the film together to make a documentary about my webcomic and comic writing and how it is all put together. :D it should be fun and rather interesting. Is anyone interested in watching the finished product? Also, the meetings will be with mostly me and my co-writer, Samuel Johnson. And probably a few different people for each meeting to help with feedback and such. I'm really excited for this to be a thing.
