I am so proud of how far this crazy herder mutt has come in such a short amount of time. She came to me an under-exercised, under-stimulated, untrained demon-beast with behavior issues that the average pet owner can't handle. That I didn't know how to handle. Now, almost three years later, I understand her. I am able to listen and communicate with her, and she has taught me so much about dog behavior and rehabilitation. Korra may not have been the dog that I wanted (at first), but she is definitely the dog that I needed. Today, I can take this pointy-eared demon dog on a 30min + walk offlead (with the leash dragging, as there are leash laws) around the neighborhood, passing dogs, cars, and all sorts of distractions without breaking a heel. She is confident, she trusts in me, and I reward her with freedom and unconditional love. For those of you who struggle with your dog's behavior problems, I understand you. I was you. We were lucky enough to find an amazing dog trainer to help us along in our journey, who gave us hope when we were in our darkest hour. I an so glad I didn't give up on Korra because my life would have been very different if I had.

This is Pezzy (above) an adorable 8 year old Yorkshire Terrier and Bodhi (below) a sweet little Min Yorkshire Terrier x chihuahua. Today I set to work with Jan ( The Owner) to stop the door and window barking, and to address Pezzys dog aggression problem. Very quickly the dogs were responding to the barking program, so we moved swiftly along to Pezzys aggression problem. In no time at all…
Hi Dogblr!
I follow quite a few of your blogs and with some of the wonderful behavioural understanding and training advice I’ve seen amongst your community I wondered if anyone could help me with a dog aggressive Dalmatian (more under the cut):
I have a wonderful 7 year old Dalmatian called Kia. We’ve had her for over 4 years now and I’ve known her for about 5. We’re her third owners and the first two and a half years of her life are almost completely unknown to us, except that she was insufficiently trained for a high energy, challenging breed (Apparently half of Dalmatians are rehomed in their first year!!).
She’s come on leaps and bounds with her relentless love of food, in that she almost never thieves now and her only minor problems really are begging (in which she responds to “no”) and occasionally being strong on the lead. Which honestly, I never would’ve expected such great behaviour from her compared to when I first met her, as she was like 90% nightmare.
She’s very smart, especially when responding to food stimulants and learns incredibly quickly. She’s wonderful with people, adores her human family and is great with kids and puppies.. But not the large majority of other dogs:
- She lunges at dogs which get close enough on the lead. We can now pass dogs on the other side of the road with her almost not reacting with me being relaxed and with food or speech distraction.
- She is extremely dominant/overbearing/bouncy when in play, whether she knows the dog or not
- Her usual reaction to dogs on a lead, whether I’m relaxed or not and whoever it is, is very loud and very sudden lurch towards the dog with barking, showing of teeth (but not full bearing of teeth) and intense tail wagging. Our reaction to this behaviour is a “NO” and keeping/pulling her out of biting range. Not the best reaction but don’t know what else to do.
- Very temperamental with which dog types she likes/dislikes. As you can see from the photos, she isn’t breed or gender specific, but as a rule she’s far better with males her age or younger, especially larger breed dogs.
- She will go into “hunting mode” when off the lead and she spots another dog nearby. If they get closer she will lie down until they’re in range of her then pounce. Usually calling her away stops this unless the dog is close by.
- She has some ‘friends’, most of which are either very relaxed but won’t take her aggressive shit, are as bouncy as she is or she’s known them since puppies. (The dogs in the photos are an older jack russell entire male, an elderly lab entire male and a young spayed female golden retriever)
- She has bitten two dogs as far as I know: one dog which constant aggressed her whilst eating in her previous home, and another whilst off the lead – a male greyhound got aggressive with one of her few ‘friends’ and she nipped a tiny bit of skin from its back.
- She is 99.99% trustworthy with puppies, even puppies she obviously isn’t keen on she will behave beautifully with.
Any advice would be very kind as it’s not in my pocket right now to afford a trainer and I don’t want to risk taking her to puppy classes and meeting an older dog she will aggress!
It would be amazing to one day walk her comfortably around other dogs if possible!

Now. When I first got Lugnut, whose picture can be seen frequently on my tumblr, I was prepared to give him a few weeks and introduce him to a female pitbull puppy. After getting him home, I quickly realized that not only was he food aggressive but he was extremely dog aggressive towards other dogs. It didn't matter if they were female or male, fixed or not fixed. He'd immediately go into attack mode and it was hard to settle him down. Months passed. I worked with him everyday with the help and advice from many friends who are dog trainers and some fellow pittie parents. He was improved enough that I thought he was ready for a sister. My first instinct was towards a blue 10 week old female blue pit who had been a birthday present for a friend and was needing a new home due to apartment regulations. I expressed interest too late and the puppy found a great home with another friend of mine. That was almost a month ago. I wasn't actively looking for another puppy but if one dropped into my lap, I wasn't going to turn them away. A puppy did drop into my lap. A 12 week old purebred black lab puppy. A puppy that Lugnut now can't live without. He's gentle as they come with her and only nipped once when I brought her home. She's been part of our family for two weeks now and he's shown no aggression whatsoever towards her at feeding or playtime. It just proves that it's all in the owner. That dog aggressive pitbulls CAN change with the help of their owners. I couldn't be more proud of my boy. He's an amazing dog and now, he has a sister named Luna.
