Agility competition last week was so, so rough. Pumpkin did not perform well. This 4-H project though—these people are incredible! The person in charge sat down with E this week and provided some practical suggestions on what to do differently to help both she and Pumpkin move forward.

Today they competed in showmanship and obedience. Our dog, who last week ate an entire bag of hot dog buns off the counter, placed second in obedience. Last year, they didn’t place at all in showmanship. This year, they took first. Woot! Then they got to compete for grand champion. E didn’t win, but again, the judge was so helpful and kind in taking time to explain to E what she needed to do differently.

E came home happy. Pumpkin came home tired. It’s a win for both.

I woke up at 5 this morning because I was feeling anxious about all of it. I’m now home prepping for a 7:30am virtual meeting followed by a 45 minute commute for a full day of in-person meetings.

I've recently figured out a training skill that's really improved my dog's (already pretty reliable) heel!

Less markers??

Marker meaning the click or "yes" preceding a reward. Ever since I learned about them, I used them for everything. It's good to precisely tell the dog exactly what they did right! But turns out precision isn't that helpful when it comes to building duration in behaviors.

So I started practicing heeling with just the cue at the start, then giving food with no sounds.

Funnily enough, I only figured this out after seeing a bunch of videos of puppies learning heel for the first time and realizing I actually wasn't sure if I'd ever used that high of a rate of reinforcement when teaching heel to my dog. I don't want any holes in my foundations, so I decided to use his lunch that day and pretend he was learning heel for the first time. Just for a few minutes, to see how it went.

In the following few outings, his heel and offered focus was the best it's ever been! He's always good, of course; he's been a reliable service dog for years. But this was a substantial difference anyway. Like he was more keeping an eye on me rather than just hearing and following cues. I had introduced the possibility that I might randomly offer treats completely silently, so he should pay close attention in case that happens!

This is my new favorite piece of our maintenance training!

This little squid did me so very proud yesterday in obedience class.

Instructors had us go first on an exercise where I had him sit at one pole, I turned (with the wrong foot at first, I started over and he waited for me and didn't budge 😭) and walked a very good distance away to the next pole, longer than I think I've ever had him stay, turned around and called him and he came in a perfectly straight line and auto sat toe to toe with me. I couldn't believe it.

And everyone clapped

(we clapped for everyone who went after us but as the only person with a "small dog" it was very gratifying)

Honestly best day of my life in recent memory and all because he is the best boy. I love when dogs surprise you.

We have a ways to go before starting rally but it gives me hope that he'll do well and will enjoy it, doesn't seem like he'll struggle with the concepts emotionally or anything. 🦊✨

Does anyone on here train service dogs? Cause that's a job I've been considering as a career. But thing is, I also want to be a highschool art teacher. I was wondering if maybe I'd be able to do both with the service dog training on the side, or if that'd be too much work. There's not much info on service dog training and it's annoying
