Penny, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

Today’s PSA is about animal neglect!!!

This is Penny. She came in for her very first grooming appointment today. She’s a year old. She came in fully pelted and reeked of cigarette smoke and was fearful of every single noise and movement. 

We preshaved her in a #7F and bathed her in anti-itch shampoo and conditioner to try to remedy the damage the matting did to her skin. We could not dry her, she freaked out when we turned the dryer on. 

Please don’t be like Penny’s owner. Work on desensitization to noise and movement, brush them regularly. Don’t wait until they’re a year old and matted to get them groomed, a good breeder will have introduced them to the process, it’s your responsibility to continue it. And PLEASE stop smoking around your animals!!!!!

The Wheaten was first recognized by the AKC in 1973 but have been around in Ireland for over 200 years! They are the 69th most popular breed in the US and a member of the terrier group. 

Their original purpose was to be an all-purpose farm dog! They would hunt small game and vermin, patrol the homestead and provide companionship. They are closely related to the Irish Terrier and Kerry Blue Terrier. 

Wheatens are friendly dogs, deeply devoted to their families and always happy, bouncy little guys. Like most terriers, they are an independent breed and require consistent, firm training. 

As their name suggests, Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers only come in wheaten color. Any other color is considered a major fault in the show ring and will be severely penalized!

On regards to @achoirofcritters post involving animal abuse and neglect I have to share a story about this dog. So, my grandparents live on the other side of Oregon near Idaho and they have these neighbors that have a HUGE dog. They used to let the dog run lose around the streets until it had tried to bite somebody and the cops had gotten involved. Now the dog stays in a tiny tiny fenced area at the side of their house, with a dog house that is literally WAY to small for him, and is hardly fed/watered. My grandpa, being who he is did not like this so he gave the dog a 2 gallon bucket of water, the dog drank half of that bucket in a matter of minutes he was so thirsty. That is a gallon of water he just basically inhaled. The neighbors then DUMPED the rest of the water out, so he didn’t have anymore water. My grandpa will also some times go over and give the dog left overs from dinner so he at least has something to eat, mostly left over meats n’ stuff. That dog has gotten whole sausages from my grandpa. But all he can really do is feed and water the dog as best as he can, because animal control is pretty much non-existent in that area. What makes it even better was, we were going to go fishing and we passed by their front yard where they were carrying their 2 chihuahua’s that were all dressed up and treated well into their house.

I hate my neighbors

I am really starting to hate my neighbors. They got a dog a long time ago and it "ran away." Do I think it actually ran away? No. I think because they don't have a secured back gate - it doesn't even latch and they don't actually have it pushed closed - that it got stolen. We have a dog fighting ring in the area and it's unfortunately not uncommon, especially since their dog was a pit bull. It also remained outside basically all the time.

They have a ton of children and I think the children, seeing my dog in my yard (with actually secured gates, and a chained gate in the far back where someone would be most likely to enter the yard to steal a dog) continued to beg for one.

They got a new puppy. This adorable black with white spots pit bull that has this ridiculously high pitch yip of a bark and huge paws. I have no idea what his name is. Rocky? Something like that. It might be Spot.

I honestly think that dog is never inside. He has this shortened chain attached to a tree, a medium dog igloo, and usually a pot and pan with food and water. He and my dog will run up and down the fence together but he can only make it about 30 feet. Not in either direction, total along the fence.

He's so desperate for attention that when I was attempting to pet him through the fence and then started to step back, he panicked and tried grabbing my hand. His tiny mouth, while not using his teeth, was like a vise on the back of my hand.

He didn't hurt me, but it just shows the desperation this little guy feels. And whenever I stepped up to the fence, he would bite at my clothing through it so that I couldn't walk away. It's not a dog that wants to hurt people. It's a dog that wants to interact with them.

I can't stand that they're doing this again. I want to report them, but would being fined and not being able to feed their kids be acceptable punishment? I doubt they'd receive criminal charges, they aren't beating the dog, it isn't malnourished, it's neglected. Which is awful, but it could be worse. So is it worth it if they get fined and their children suffer? Or the dog gets taken away and put into animal control, most likely to be destroyed or even possibly adopted by someone involved in the local fight rings? He's gotten bigger, his chances of being adopted have gone down significantly.

There's a no kill shelter I know of that can come and check it out, but they don't actually have authority as far as I know. They'll come and talk to them, however, which might be enough...

I don't know what to do, because there are 5 children under the age of 6 and another under 10, another teen. I'm not even sure how many people live there, but I know one of the little boys that lives there is actually the woman and man's grandson they're taking care of. If it was just the two parents living there, I'd report it in a second. Their house is owned by my dad's oldest friend, who is our other neighbor, also the technical owner of my house. I don't want that to go into my considerations, but it does complicate matters.

I wish I could just unhook his chain and watch him run off into the sunset and know he'd be okay, but that's not even a real option. Do they not get that this isn't a play thing for the kids to use when they covet the neighbor? That it's a living thing with feelings and a developing psychology that's being affected and damaged by this? We have raccoons, gophers, and skunks that are extremely common in my neighborhood. A gopher has lived in my yard for years. I keep smelling skunk when I walk out the back door. I realize it's most likely this dog being sprayed.

Does anyone have legitimate advice? More than just "report their asses"? Something constructive. It's an unfortunately complicated issue.
