Riley McCusker of the United States of America trains uneven bars at the 2018 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Doha, Qatar. (x)
Simone when asked what her secret is:
“I train a lot and I train hard!“
Simone is unbelievable. In the hospital 16 hours before competing at Worlds with a kidney stone and comes out with top finishes on every event but bars, where she is currently in second with a significant break.
Morgan came out and did exactly the same sort of performance she gave when she won the all-around title last year. She provided secure lead-offs for the team, will qualify to the all-around final with a good shot at the podium, will likely make floor finals, and has an outside shot at bars finals. Not bad!
In comparison, Riley had a disappointing day. This was her first major international event--she’s only had Jesolo and American Cup back in 2017. I’m sure she came in hoping to make all-around, bars, beam, and floor and expecting to at minimum make bars, but team will be her only final because of major errors on her part. I’m sure she’s angry at herself, and I hope she can find peace in it and come back with a Jordyn mindset in team finals.
Grace did a fabulous job today. She hit everything she was supposed to hit, established herself as a team player who can by relied on anywhere you need he, and she has a shot of making vault finals--she’s currently sitting in 5th. More likely, she’ll be a reserve, but anything can happen with vault.
Kara had one job here, and she nailed it. She got all her ring elements credited, something people had worried about, and she’ll qualify to beam finals with style. She looked nervous going up, but showed all her trademarked grace and poise once the routine started.
Overall, a good day for the US. Everyone should be in the team final line-ups, and the team should have at least eight individual finals, maybe as many as ten, and has as a team they’re 12 points ahead of Japan in second at the moment. China and Russia are yet to come, but I think it’s safe to say that the US has made a statement.
Russia start on floor at Worlds... 🇷🇺
