Everyone wants to graduate with you.
Doremi’s immediate response to Everyone wants to graduate with you is..
Why?
This question is so crucial to Doremi’s characterisation. I truly believe Doremi is in genuine disbelief here - and by extension any ephemeral occasion where someone speaks highly of her. In Doremi’s mind, why would they? Why would anyone want to graduate with her, or even care if she was there or not? She says herself there’s not one good point about me. None. She can’t even name one positive trait she has. This isn’t the only time either.
Doremi does not respect nor even earnestly likes herself. In fact, I would go as far to say she utterly despises herself. She is consistently demeaning or reprimanding herself and when she isn't others are. She's been treated as inferior from a young age. This low self perception undoubtedly stemmed from her Mum being forcing her dream onto Doremi and chastising her when she wasn’t up to her standards- but that's a whole other topic I will be expatiating on in future. This imposter syndrome is so engrained into psyche that she was chiefly enamoured by witches because she believed she so inadequate, such a failure, that only magic could allow her to be good enough.
Need I remind you of Doremi’s catch phrase: I’m the unluckiest pretty girl in the whole world. This line is not her just naively believing that she’s a hapless person due to cruel fate or what not but that it's caused by her. I perceive this dialogue as Doremi subconsciously defining herself by failure and disappointment. It's completely heart-shattering to witness this irritable, neurotic and foolish but ultimately self sacrificing and altruistic girl not realise her worth in any sincere way. To the point where she doesn’t just dismiss praise but genuinely does not understand how someone could perceive her that way. All the more reason why Doremi finally realising why they want to graduate with her is so moving.
