He tugged the shorter man by his belt, stopping both of them in their tracks to unbuckle the holster where the squirrel hung from Holden’s side.
“Told you I don’t want you carryin’ that shit.”
“Why? I can skin it.” Holden stumbled a bit at the intrusion.
“You can skin a damn fish.” Daryl scolded, poking his chest. “I don’t want you touchin’ nothing with fur. And lend me that knife while y’r at it, I ain’t gonna play doctor once you nick yourself.” He fastened their game to his own belt.
“Sure,” Holden spoke kindly against the grain of Daryl’s tone. “Sorry to get in your way. This’s your domain, after all.” He smiled up warmly at the man.
Daryl’s brow furrowed, he broke his gaze as Holden passively handed over the knife, hands grazing as the small object was passed from one to the other.
“What?” Holden inquired with a small laugh.
“Nothin’,” Daryl quietly fidgeted with the knife in his hand, turning it over a few times. He gave Holden a gentle nudge with his elbow, signaling to continue their walk back to camp. “Starvin’.”
