yoo i remember you doing perfume reviews a while back, my partner has been wanting to get into fragrances for a while and i want to get her something for christmas. are there any particular "discovery kits" etc youd recommend? i think she likes warm florals but i also think she'd like to explore more broadly. thanks!!

I have at this point tried a lot of discovery kits and I have two recs:

one: Macy's sampler kits. Looks like they have this option for 34$ or this one for 30$ this year. I got one as a bonus gift last year and while half the stuff I got was not my thing, that sampler did lead me to Kenzo's Flower, which is now my signature scent.

two: the Etat Libre d'Orange ultimate sample kit is on sale right now for 37$ and I can't over-rec it. Hell, i got mine about this time last year and I have STILL been trying out scents. (I put on Tom of Finland for writing time today, REALLY nice). ELDO will give you creative and strange and sometimes-offputting and sometimes incredible scents. and its so expansive, your partner should get a LOT of mileage out of it.

i wish the Alexandria sampler was on sale but its a chunky 60$ right now. Maybe bookmark it for a birthday gift. You get 10, and I personally rec making sure one of those is Cherry de Carmen (BOOZY cherry dark scent, apparently a dupe of Creed's Carmina) and another is Dark Knight (dupe of Kilian's Black Phantom, v heavy but fucking incredible). the one thing about Alexandria, though, is they are a dupe house, so they don't let the perfumes sit and settle before shipping them out. when they arrive, they might smell REALLY off. but if you leave them for a few weeks, they will change DRAMATICALLY as they go through the aging process more upscale perfumers do before selling you the bottle. just spritz them once or twice then put them away. i promise i know what i'm talking about here.

hello!! i just bought your risograph prints (omg theyre gorgeous) and i was wondering if you went thru any particular process to make them more risograph-friendly? like did you work with a limited color palette in mind or something like that?? im taking a risograph zine class this semester and im amazed at the color range your prints have!! thanks!!!

Thank you! The Witch Sister series were the first riso prints I did so I sort of figured things out as I went along. First I chose the three colors I wanted to use out of the available inks; I knew I wanted a blue, pink, and yellow to get a wide color range. Then I came up with a color palette roughly based on those and drew my images as I normally would in Photoshop.

Next I used split channels to get my separate CMYK layers. I made a mockup in PS of what they would look like printed in my chosen inks and edited them a bit until I liked how it looked. Since I was only using three colors, the “black” (that darkest color) is just made of all three inks at 100%. Below are the final blue, fluorescent pink, and yellow layers as they would be sent to the printer.

And here’s the progress of the image; first as I originally drew it in PS, then the PS mockup of how it would look printed with my three riso colors, and last the finished scanned riso print.

So I would suggest finding tutorials and playing around with split channels (you could also try using the duotone/tritone/quadtone image mode) for a similar effect. Good luck in your class!
