jack is typically a nickname for john and jackson in the US

sure I get you, and I'm sure "Jack" as a name by itself is a little more common now than it was a hundred years ago, I think I was just surprised that the information is not really ever mentioned/I didn't remember it being mentioned. it never really crossed my mind that his name could've been a nickname

it adds another layer of John and Jack's relationship that's interesting and could've been/could be explored more
