Now I’m curious: what makes OMGLOL dolls considered to have such quality? I’m new to dolls (bc I only rlly needed one to practice sewing with) and is it the hair? Are the joints special? I can’t tell just looking
allow me to set the stage. Winter, 2019. Three years since anything resembling a monster high doll had graced the shelves, and the community was making do with kit-bashing hairdorables onto snapstar bodies or rebodying barbies onto any MTM they could find.
Then, of all things, MGA announced they were turning their blind box hit, OMG Surprise into full sized dolls.
These girls were nothing like we'd seen since Bratz was at it peak. They're all high quality dolls, but let's focus on Swag as our "for instance":
(pic from ebay, but here you can see the articulation- arms are articulated, legs are click-knees)
Multiple layers of clothes, and said clothing is made of multiple types of fabric. Quality fabric at that, none of that papery stuff mattel uses. Those are real little buttons on her pants, and a little zipper.
The designs are so strong, even if you find one garish, there's an OMGLOL for everyone.
Want a cowgirl? We've got you covered:
Thinking of starting a band?
Maybe you're looking for something a little softer and sweeter?
There's just no other line with their variety and quality.
Now, a lot of people with complain about their lollipop heads and same faces, but I feel like you could argue that brands like pulip or blythe (or bratz, frankly) have similar proportions.
I really feel the doll community has a lot to owe to them for taking us out of the doll drought of 2016-2019, because they showed retailers that kids and adults were still hungry for a good doll line (and willing to pay $30 for one). I have a tin foil hat theory that MGA launched the line to get consumers more comfortable with street fashion on dolls versus Barbie's more pedestrian fashionista flour sacks and the verrrry safe 2015 bratz and monster high reboots.
