“if things get really dicey, i can lend you enough to get you through the week.”
[This one didn't specify who was saying it, so I went with James.]
"It doesn't have to be this way," James said again. He carefully placed the jewelry box back up on the mantle where it belonged. It was just Dolly's luck there wasn't anything in it anyway. "If things get really dicey, I can lead you enough to get you through the week."
He winced. It was the wrong thing to say, and James knew it was the wrong thing. Dolly was too proud to take that as it was.
"Not because I think you can't," he said quickly, taking a step forward as she took one back. "I want to. If it matters that much, you can pay me back later, when things have settled. I just... You've got more options. I need you to believe me."
