How to Get the Cheapest Heating Oil
The simplest way to get the best deal on your domestic fuel is to hunt around and compare prices. Be wary of some comparison sites through, as a portion of them are actually owned by the big oil giants, giving them reason to be biased. Instead, opt to get heating oil quotes from independent or family-owned oil suppliers directly and compare the prices yourself. This way, you know that you’re getting a fair deal.
Once you have a few quotes, it may be tempting to opt for the cheapest oil supplier immediately. Take some time to look around a few companies websites to get a feel for how they will provide service. In particular, check to see if they have testimonials on their sites, or elsewhere so you can see how they deal with customers. Your supplier will be delivering oil in large tankers and will need access to your garden to fill your tank, so choosing a trusted company is important.
When you have selected your chosen supplier, keep track of their prices seasonally, as they will fluctuate. This is the same with all oil suppliers, as the demand for home heating oil is much higher in winter, as much as 50%. When the weather is warmer and we don’t tend to reach for the thermostat as much, the prices are much cheaper as demand is lower, so this is the best time to buy. Try to stock up in the summer so that you aren’t paying more in winter when you really need it.
Consider setting up a community buying group to buy your oil in larger quantities which will be cheaper as it is more efficient for the supplier. You will need one person to take charge and ensure everyone puts their orders in for the same delivery. A community group also makes it easier to stock up on oil in the summer and spread the cost out.
