Homemaker is a performance series in which artist Jermaine Harmon does typical house chores (from washing dishes to beauty rituals) in non-traditional, exterior spaces in and around Houston, TX.
Beauty Rituals is the second installment of the Homemaker series.
The series challenges the idea of traditional spheres by engaging traditionally domestic chores in the public domain as he contemplates the concepts of gender roles within the domestic and the public, and how they coexist. Additionally, Homemaker uses the city’s landscape not only as a metaphor for home (as Harmon himself is a transplant, arriving in Houston in 2015), but to also bring attention to the citywide problem of the rapidly increasing homeless population.
