Before he could say anything more about getting dry, Valentina stepped in and started directing the others to gather supplies so they could wait out the storm. That left Augustus and Dominic behind with the animals. There was a silence between them that was deafening. So much hurt between the pair of them spanning decades. Augustus didn’t look at his brother right away. He stood there a moment, thinking it through, though he already knew there was only one way forward.
“You know what we have to do,” he said finally ending the silence between them.
If he had known the storm would turn this bad, he would have kept the animals back at the ranch, let them roam the pasture where they belonged. But packed into a space like this, it was a disaster waiting to happen. One wrong noise, one sudden movement, and the whole place could erupt, animals spooking, people getting hurt.
“I’ll make my way through and get the doors open.” He knew what it meant, the moment those doors opened, the rain would come crashing in, and he would be right in the middle of it. “We keep them in the pens until then,” Gus continued, finally meeting Dominic’s gaze. “Once the doors are open, we move them one group at a time. The smaller animals can stay, I think we can handle them.”
