The Rookwoods had sworn to save humanity by eradicating vampires, a mission that had been ingrained in their bloodline for generations. Being a hunter was Dominic’s birthright, his purpose, and the only thing he had ever truly loved. Immortality and strength were gifts bestowed upon his family to help them protect and fight, and the last thing Dominic had ever imagined, or wanted, was to love one of them.
Monsters. Predators. Beasts.
They had called him an animal, too, but nothing ever shook Dominic’s conviction that he was on the side of righteousness, battling evil and saving lives. Betraying that legacy was unthinkable. Even as he discovered he could love another person, he knew he could never truly be with a vampire. That immutable truth haunted him now, fueling the frustration and pain surging through his rippling body.
His jaw clenched, large fists tightening as he glowered harshly at his former lover, a storm of emotions flashing behind his crimson-streaked eyes. Part of him couldn’t understand why he’d even let them through the door. Deep down, he’d been grappling with the horrifying thought that he might have to kill someone he once believed he couldn’t live without. It was twisted, cruel, and utterly unbearable, but it was the life the fates had written for him----- harsh and unrelenting.
"They did this to you," Dominic snapped, his voice low and jagged, every word scraping like broken glass. "They made you this way. This is what they do----- prey on others, take everything... and now, you're one of them.” His chest heaved with the force of his pounding heart, threatening to shatter beneath the weight of it all. "I----- I can’t help you."
Each word dripped with pain as he forced himself to continue. "You shouldn’t be here. What we had... it’s in the past now."
