"gallery@sarri12 was created to provide an arts meeting point for many artists who work in the streets of Athens. g
allery@sarri12 offers a large workspace complete with materials such as spray, acrylic paints and brushes, a library of art, history, philosophy, theatre, politics and history books and journals. There are study and workstations, free internet and assistance for young artists in whatever they may need.
gallery@sarri12 is also, of course, a gallery. The artistic director Alexandros Skoutariotis curates three monthly exhibitions of up to three artists at a time.
Artists from anywhere in the world wishing to visit Athens can apply for a two week residency programme. Accommodation is provided by Boutique Athens, a business offering quality short term apartment accommodation to visitors to Athens. The details of the residency programme can be seen in the heading Residency Programme in the headings on the home page."
This is very much worth checking out! It's a gallery by Sonke, an already well established artist in Greece and in Europe.
Right now the Love and Death exhibition is going on at the gallery, with FANTASTIC works by Dimitris Ntokos and Don Forty. I have posted many works by both on my blog and I loooove these artists.
Ntokos' art feels at home in a gallery, although he has painted many walls in streets. His art is intricate and compelling, either on a street or in an exhibition. His beetles and other animals are really something to look at.
Don Forty comes from the streets. I've seen his works in streets and there's something very intense about them. Usually they are discreet while still catching your eye and his technique really is impressive. Turns out this is true for a gallery setting as well! Right across the street from the gallery is a big wall painted by him, so after seeing his works in there I went to look at the wall and back in the gallery again. I have to say, for me his walls can't really be matched. I prefer him in the streets. But his works at the gallery really are awesome, you have to stop and look. Those brush strokes, damn!
Of course the main artist at the gallery is Sonke himself. If you've seen his work on the streets (which, if you walk in Athens you have, he's painted everywhere) it's very interesting to see him in a gallery setting. He's very prolific and I like how he's adjusted his style for any exhibition. There's really not much to say, Sonke is a very big artist right now, and for good reason.
Also the setting of the gallery is fantastic. Sarri street is a literal street gallery, on the walls all along that street and in the surrounding alleys you can find works by most Greek street artists, one next to the other. It is a fantastic place for a gallery that focuses on street art.
So, next time you're in downtown Athens and in the Psirri area in particular, take a walk down Sarri street, see some pretty awesome street art, including works by Don Forty, Sonke and Ntokos, and pass by the gallery for some more awesomeness!
