Maybe it wasn't just a joke...

Word Count : 494 Characters : Donis & Reign ( EXPLANATORY - EVENT )

Donis has always been a regular presence in Reign’s office, dropping by every few day of the week, hanging around without any real purpose, just existing in the comfort of their very very long-standing friendship. For years, this routine was normal, even welcomed. Clearly, things had started shifting, especially now that they were in a new building and Reign was in a committed relationship. Though nothing had really changed in Reign’s behavior, Donis started to notice the differences.. Reign’s schedule was tighter, his attention was pulled to new directions, and the kind of closeness they used to share was far less effortless than usual.

One lovelyyy afternoon, during another one of Donis’s usual drop-ins, Reign made a bit of an offhanded joke. It was something like, “You don’t have the numbers to be in my office right now, you know that, right?” just a little jab at Donis’ current popularity status compared one of Reign’s bigger clients at the time. It wasn’t meant to hurt, he has always teased like that. This time, it landed much differently.

He laughed at the moment, as expected.

As the conversation moved on, a part of Donis stayed behind, stuck on that same line. Not because he thought Reign meant it, not even because it was particularly harsher than usual, but because it brushed too close to a fear he barley even acknowledged.. Some people only valued him for what he could offer, not who he was. In that moment, it really felt like maybe even Reign, his closest friend for years, saw him through that same lens. He stopped himself from making the kinds of jokes he’d normally throw out so casually. It felt like he was trying too hard now, like maybe Reign didn’t want that kind of energy anymore. Maybe he never did. Maybe it had been about numbers or status all along.

That day, Donis left earlier than usual, only an hour or two after getting there. Reign didn’t notice much, deep in his work, very ironically focused on a campaign for the same newer, more high-profile client at the time, the one inspiring the joke at all. The same kind of client Donis was no longer, even if it was for some "seasonal bullshit" by the words of Reign.

The feeling didn’t last. Reign found time again, made room for him in his own small unintentional ways. Their usual program resumed. The friendship found its way back. Donis never brought up the moment, never said anything to anyone. That’s not his style. He moved on, like he always does. It's what his job demands and what he’s best at.

But the truth was, even if he had laughed, even if he had stayed around longer, something in him had changed. Just for that moment at least. Just long enough for the joke to settle in the part of him that still wondered if being enough had ever really been about him at all..

「 Donis 」 “Uhhh who are you?”

「 Finnegan 」 “Funny because I think I should be asking you that..”

「 Donis 」 “I’m looking for Reign. This is his place, right?”

「 Finnegan 」 “That is corrrrrect. You must be one of his... 'clients'?”

「 Donis 」 “What?- No? I-”

「 Finnegan 」 “Just checking. He moved on from that, but you never know, ya know?”

「 Donis 」 “So, who exactly are you”

「 Finnegan 」 “I’m his boyfriend.”

「 Donis 」 “Raaaay”

「 Reign 」 “..Hm?”

「 Donis 」 “Happy birthday!”

「 Reign 」 “Huh? Oh, it’s the 5th already..”

「 Donis 」 “You didn’t even notice?”

「 Reign 」 “No, I guess not…”

「 Donis 」 “Does that mean you aren’t busy after all this?”

「 Reign 」 “As free as a bird.”

「 Donis 」 “Then…. I have reservations!”

「 Reign 」 “I’m not sure we could even be seen—“

「 Donis 」 “I’ll have a car pick us up and we can just head in like normal. Trust me I’ve got to all planned.”

「 Reign 」 “So what exactly was your plan if I was busy?”

「 Donis 」 “Cancel the reservation, pay the fees, give you the gifts the next day.”

「 Reign 」 “Gifts?”

「 Donis 」 “… I ruined the surprise.”

「 Reign 」 “You really didn’t have to do all this… I mean, I’m beyond grateful but—“

「 Donis 」 “Reign you didn’t even remember it was your own birthday. It’s a special day.”

I really want to write out the one very serious argument that Donis and Reign had.. It’s the first time they actually are going back and forth on something AND it ends in both of them apologizing for what they had said ( ºΔº )

51. Reign tried to go vegan and quick after a week.

Reign started watching documentaries, which led him to decide to become vegan a week later after some binging. He was very committed at that point, putting together an entire food plan, meal prep, just the whole nine yards for this. Where he went wrong was telling Donis about this- you see, he didn't believe him for a second that he'd even make it a month because, for all he knew, Reign has always been a pretty savory guy when it comes to food. He invited Reign out to dinner. This was nothing new for them, as they were used to having meal times together. In a very expensive and fancy restaurant, Donis ordered a steak and Reign ordered a cauliflower mock steak of sorts. Listen.. temptation took over. The actual stake looked too good. That's how he quit. I'm sure Donis did all of that on purpose. ALSO I have this random joke post abt it

52. Khoson usually babysits for Yasmin, but sometimes she will have to drop her littles off to Reign.

Yasmin had only one child at the start of this, Starlie, and was expecting her second at this point. Since her parents were still working at the time, she was unable to leave her with them, so she chose to leave her with her brother, Khoson. She started asking Reign because Khoson would just disappear from the face the earth for weeks at a time. From then on, she continued to do so because he seemed more dependable.. He actually was around- Reign also worked, but he had enough days to work from home and could get away with bringing Starlie to his office if she didn't cause any problems. I have daydreamed many times about Reign taking her to work with him and her meeting a few of my other paras. Even a funny moment when someone asked if she was HIS child. I mean, he takes her as his own, and it was even a starting point for him wanting children of his own, but that is something for the future to decide. (He does have kids later on shhh)

53. Yasmin was pregnant during her wedding.

There isn't much more to say about this. The best wedding day they could choose was when she was still carrying her first child. It wasn't a big deal, but there were some small arguments because she wanted to drink on her wedding day but couldn't.
