‘The Last Time’ 🠪 The Script (Sunsets & Full Moons 2019)
I need more Tatennant and Doctor/Donna fics, I'm running out of them Ç.Ç
Incomplete Hearts
He had been spending more time in her bedroom. The TARDIS had tried several times to tempt him to go out and explore. It hadn’t worked. He noted the amount of time that had passed. Today would be the twelfth day he had been in the TARDIS. In total it had been about two months since the reality bomb and Davros.
Two months since everyone had been in the TARDIS.
But most importantly, two months since Donna’s fate.
And that’s why he stayed in her bedroom. It was the last place that he could remember spending an intimate moment with her, before going to Shan Shen.
Her face was only mere inches away. They laid in her bed, dressed in nothing but the sheets and blanket. She seemed asleep so the Doctor admired her form. He controlled his hand from reaching up to touch her flushed cheeks.
“It doesn’t have to mean anything.”
He took and a chance and moved a piece of her gorgeous hair away from her face. “Is that what you want?”
Her response took several seconds. “Of course. Just mates, remember?”
With her eyes closed, she completely missed the sadness that dawned on the Doctor’s face. He wanted to protest but found his voice gone. He was never good at these things.
What came out of his mouth disappointed him further. “Best mates.”
Donna opened her eyes and forced a smile.
He noticed.
Yet he didn’t ask her about it. Never mentioned it. It meant she didn’t like their agreement either. And maybe, just maybe, she loved him the way he loved her. That night should have proved it all because that was one of the most passionate moments in his entire life. But he missed his opportunity to tell her. Talking about his feelings was never an ability of his.
The Doctor remembered her smile once again. After a while, he figured out Donna was saving herself the heartbreak as she was a firm believer that Rose was his one true love. He cried over that fact several times. Rose could not even compare to Donna. He had fallen out of love for the blonde, for awhile now. Ever since Pompeii where Donna showed her the courage he admired so much. Her selflessness was a real change.
From then on, he put his full effort into giving Donna the best experience of any companion he had. Of course, it wasn’t a full success, but he could honestly say he had tried his best. Taking her to the Ood Sphere wasn’t great, however, he once again marveled at the redhead’s compassion and understanding towards the Ood. The incident with the Sontarans wasn’t intentional yet Donna’s bravery only made him fall harder for her. Her brilliance on Messaline was something the Doctor found very attractive. Seeing her so excited while solving a mystery with Agatha Christie could not have been a better reward for him (along with a kiss that topped it all off in which he felt his lips tingle for days). His hearts broke for both River’s death and the fact that Donna had lived a happy life without him during their time at The Library. He was just glad to have Donna back with him as it was his fault to send her to a fake world and allow her to build up false love for a family that never existed. She never blamed him.
It was after Midnight in which the Doctor absolutely knew he was in love with Donna Noble. They had spent days just in the TARDIS as he recovered from his possession. Donna had lay with him every night and rocked him to sleep. She cooked and read to him treating him as a child. He couldn’t have appreciated it more. To thank her, he took her shopping and out to dinner. When they came back to the TARDIS, it happened in a flash. They were kissing, clothes went flying, and before they knew it they were laying together in her bed.
The Doctor sat up at once at the sound of the TARDIS. An alarm was going off. He moved off of Donna’s old bed and realized that his face was wet with tears. How pathetic he must of looked.
His legs dragged him into the console room and he grabbed the screen with the least enthusiasm he ever had. The information only annoyed him.
“Refuel? You don’t need to be refueled. You will be good for a couple of months, maybe even a year or two.”
The alert continued to flash in his face.
“Stop being daft. We don’t need to go to Cardiff anytime soon.”
A powerful gust of cold air knocked him onto his rear.
“What was that for?!”
The alert seemed to get more obnoxious.
“You don’t need to refuel for the last time!”
The ship rattled and jumped wildly before becoming very still.
The Doctor jumped up from the floor and checked the monitor. “We’ve landed? Wha…? In the Torchwood Hub?! Why have you gone and done that?!”
The TARDIS hummed.
“No. I will not go out there. Martha and Jack practically sent me into my eleventh incarnation when I warned them about Do-, er, the metacrisis.”
The humming turned into deep growling.
“No!”
The TARDIS finally decided to shut herself down completely. The lights went out in a second and the Doctor was stuck in pitch black darkness. The Time Lord slammed his hands on the console, something he rarely did. It was only ever if he was furious.
“Why are you doing this?!”
No response.
He pulled at his hair. For the first time he noticed the buildup of grease and dirt that had weaved its way into his brown locks. The Doctor was disgusted for only a minute before directing his speech to the ship.
“Why…” He begged more than demanded. His voice had quieted.
Nothing.
His speech broke. “I don’t want…they will remind me…so…the guilt…”
The Doctor’s form crumpled to the floor. His knees dug into the grating below him. All he wanted was comfort. Any kind of soft words telling him it was alright would have done wonders for him. Martha and Jack couldn’t provide anything as their temporary anger blinded them from their natural kindness. There was only one person that was perfect for the job, a person who would know him as a stranger. And that fact caused a sob to rack his body.
He couldn’t keep doing this. She wouldn’t want this. She would label him a fool. No. It was time to do what he needed: move on. He wouldn’t run, especially from his friends (or whatever he was to them at the moment). The Doctor needed to face them. He was the Doctor, the oncoming storm. He would live on.
Pushing himself off the ground, he roughly rubbed his face from several tear streaks and opened his bloodshot eyes with determination. The Doctor walked into a shadowed hallway while gritting his teeth.
If he was going to convince himself and everyone else that he moved on, then he was going to at least look the part.
***********************************************************************************
The Doctor quietly closed the doors of the TARDIS. His hands remained in his new trouser pockets. Although she had shut herself down, the ship allowed him to get washed up and changed. His attire was laid out by the TARDIS and it was nowhere near his usual clothes. The TARDIS allowed him to wear a suit but only the jacket. It was a dark blue, darker than the TARDIS, and he wore a brown shirt along with a knitted white and brown tie. His trousers were tan colored and the most surprising were his shoes: they were dress shoes. No converse this time. Surprisingly, he didn’t argue. Another drastic change was his hair. No longer was it defying gravity but was even folded over. Upon his face, he refused to shave and topped his new look appearing rugged.
His brown eyes remained ice cold and his mouth remained tightly pressed in a line. The Doctor looked older, his exact intentions.
In front of him, the Torchwood stood in all its glory. It was disheveled but only indicated that activity continued for the team. The Doctor could only see himself here with Martha and Jack towering over him.
“Are you out of your damn mind?” Jack was on the verge to grabbing his suit jacket.
He kept his face still. “It had to be done.”
“Doctor.” Martha approached him with her arms crossed. “Did she want this?”
He gave them silence.
“Did Donna want you to do this?” The immortal asked through gritted teeth.
His eyes diverted to the floor.
For the first time, Martha raised her voice at him. “Answer the question!”
“No!” He sneered at them. The other two jumped back slightly at his angered expression. “She told me she didn’t want to go back. She begged me not to send her back. But what was I suppose to do, Martha? What was I suppose to do, Jack? She would have died! Did you hear me? Died! I couldn’t live with that.”
A silence fell over them. All of them were fuming, not knowing what else to say about the situation. It was Jack that broke the quietness and prevented him from running off.
“Tell me that you told her.”
He knew exactly what he was talking about. “Told her what.”
Jack sarcastically laughed. “No. Don’t do this. Tell me you told her. You had to. It was your last chance.”
This time he didn’t answer.
“Fuck! You are the biggest fucking idiot!” Jack stormed off into his office. The door slammed hard enough to make Martha yelp.
“Shit…” Martha said under her breath. Not even giving him one last look, she ran off towards Jack leaving him with wet eyes.
Even after remembering, his face remained unchanged. His eyes caught movement in Jack’s office. There were two crouched shadows on the ground. The Doctor managed to roll his eyes. At least Jack had returned to normal.
The Doctor journeyed up the stairs, his new brown dress shoes causing the metal to creak. He finally reached the door. Known voices entered his ears.
“Come on. Where are you?”
“This may have been a bad idea. I couldn’t find him for an hour last time.”
“But it’s his favorite game!”
The time lord raised an eyebrow. He had to admit that Jack had really changed his foreplay methods since the last time he had boasted about them. And was that Martha’s voice? Had the immortal finally convinced Martha? Taking a deep breath, the Doctor turned the door knob and stood at the door frame.
In any other case, he would have loved to photograph the faces before him. Jack and Martha were staring up at him on all fours on the ground. The expressions on their face were unreadable. However, that wasn’t what had caught the Doctor’s eye.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
He just continued to stare in their general direction.
Jack called to him again. “How long were you here? How did you even get in the hub?”
“Jack, I’m pretty sure the Doctor is capable of hacking our security systems. If anything he could have materialized in here with the TARDIS.” Martha explained. Seconds later, her eyes popped out. “Oh my god!”
“What is it?”
Martha turned towards Jack. “Al! We have to find him! What if…”
“Shit!”
And with that, the two jumped up off their feet and dashed towards the door. The Doctor did not move however.
Jack tried pushing him out of the way to no success. “Doctor, move!”
“But, Jack-“
Now it was Martha’s turn. “Doctor, please! We have to find someone and he may just have ended up under your bloody ship!”
“Martha, I-“
“Damn it! Just move will you!”
The Doctor pulled a hand out of one of his pockets and held it up. “But I know-“
“This is a matter of life or death!” Jack suddenly grabbed at his hair. “Actually, no. When his mother finds out, it will just mean death! If you care about us enough, then you will save our lives by moving!”
“If you guys just listen-“
Martha threw her hands up in the air. “What?! What is it, Doctor?!”
The time lord cleared his throat. He reached up and pretended to fix his tie. His eyes met both of theirs. “Now then. Is that what you are looking for?”
Jack and Martha followed his finger and found themselves looking towards the ceiling. Long behold, a toddler sat upside down on the ceiling chewing on a silver device.
“Al? Al! Bloody hell! How did he get up there?” Martha frantically tried reaching for him.
Jack squinted his eyes. “That’s…that’s the antigravity device! How did he get a hold of that!?”
“More importantly, who is Al?” The Doctor asked curiously.
Jack and Martha looked back at him only to shake their heads simultaneously. He didn’t appreciate the gesture much.
“Doctor, can you get him down, please?” Martha asked.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his sonic screwdriver. The Doctor aimed it at the device and instantly the toddler slowly floated down into Martha’s waiting arms. She held him close, but the little boy giggled in delight from his short ride.
The time lord studied the small boy. He looked about two or three years old. He grabbed at Martha’s sweater as it were the most interesting thing in the world. On top of that, she often had to hold his head up as it would bob backwards from time to time. The Doctor found this intriguing. Appearance wise, the little boy had bright ginger hair that curled in every which way. Several locks fell over his eyes that he could just not determine the color. Were they blue? Green? Gold? Maybe all three. Finally, his face was covered in freckles and if it weren’t for the white long sleeve and green corduroy overalls he was dressed in, the Doctor could only guess that his body was covered in freckles as well. The thought almost made him smile for this little stranger.
Jack ruffled the boy’s head. “What are we going to do with you? You really do want Mummy to kill us, don’t you?”
“Now Al, what did we say about touching things?” Martha shook him to make him giggle.
“Well, if you two were watching him more carefully, then maybe you could have prevented this entire ordeal.” The Doctor surprised himself with the protective tone that came out.
He was shocked once more with the glares that came from the two in front of him. Al remained occupied by his overall buttons.
“We were just playing a game. Ever heard of hide and seek?” Jack crossed his arms.
The Doctor returned his hands into his pockets. “Yes. However, there are better settings than an alien capture and research facility.”
“And why do you care so much? You barely know the kid.” There was a good amount of venom in Jack’s comeback.
“I’m not that cold hearted, Captain. He is but a child.”
The immortal just scoffed.
“Anyways,” Martha started. She placed Al upon her hip. “What are you doing here exactly, Doctor?”
The time lord continued to gaze at Al. The toddler was suddenly fascinated by his curly ginger hair. “It wasn’t any of my doing. The TARDIS decided herself that she wanted to come here and has shut herself down. I’m a bit stuck, although, I am sure the TARDIS wanted me to come here for some important reason.”
He noticed Jack and Martha look at each other suspiciously.
“And you two are suddenly looking quite apprehensive. In fact, this entire encounter has been peculiar.”
Jack laughed rudely to direct the attention back to the Doctor. “We’re peculiar? What’s peculiar are those clothes. That isn’t your usual get up. What’s the deal?”
“Look at that, Jack! No converse!” Both of them gazed at his new leather shoes.
“Just making a few changes, that’s all.” He wouldn’t let them win over him. “Now, may I ask how you two managed to obtain a child?”
”He does have a name. Al wouldn’t appreciate you referring to him as a general child.” Jack rolled his eyes at him.
Al gurgled.
The Doctor nodded. “Actually, he would like it if you called him by his real name.” He paused and grinned madly. “Alonso! His real name is Alonso! I like him already.”
“How did you know that?” Martha asked.
“Because Alonso told me.” The Doctor answered as if it were a stupid question. Alonso gurgled once more. “Yes. He only likes it when Mummy calls him Al. He nicely asks that you use his proper name with him.”
“Typical. The man can talk to babies.” Jack said.
The Doctor sniffed. “Anyways, care to explain why he is here?”
Both Jack and Martha blurted out an answer.
“Babysitting.”
The Doctor quirked his eyebrow at their response. “Babysitting. Really. What? Torchwood wanted to branch out and decided to join their alien hunting with babysitting?”
Jack rolled his eyes once more. “Doctor, don’t be such a smart ass. We are just watching Al for a friend.”
“Alonso.”
“Yes, Alonso.”
“It’s fine. Gwen and Mickey are out patrolling. We just have to alert them of any rift activity from here. We aren’t totally irresponsible.” Martha justified.
The time lord only stared at them while breathing deeply. “Okay. Second question. Who is so special that they get Torchwood to watch her son?”
The two before him opened their mouths only to close them once more. Jack managed to answer. “Just someone who is very important.” Important to the entire universe.
“And that is?” The Doctor pressed on.
Martha cleared her throat. “You will meet her soon enough since you are staying. You are staying right?”
“If that is okay with you two.” He asked hesitantly.
Jack sighed deeply. “We aren’t that rude. Even if I want to sock you in the face right now.”
******************************************************************************
The Doctor stood gawking at the small boy. You could even say that his mouth was slightly open.
Martha and Jack had put him in charge of watching Alonso for awhile as they had to make an important call to someone. Of course, the Doctor wasn’t oblivious to the sneaking nature of the two and concluded that this call was somehow about him. He would have easily listening in on them if it weren’t for his full attention put on the child in front of him.
Nevertheless, Alonso had declared he was hungry and the Doctor reached into a blue colored bag that Martha had declared was Alonso’s travel bag. He was surprised to find about two bundles of bananas. The moment he pulled both out Alonso was grabbing for them. The Doctor put no limit and in just ten minutes, he had gone through both banana bundles. As of right now, the ginger haired boy was playing with the sea of peels around him.
“Oh, Doctor. You let him eat all of those bananas? He was only allowed to have two or three at a time.” The time lord heard Martha’s voice pass him from behind.
He was still gaping. “I can’t believe he ate all of that fruit. That’s concerning isn’t it?”
A strong hand slapped him on the back. Jack laughed. “I think I remember you going through three bundles before. Quite the sight to see.” He winked.
“Jack…” The Doctor warned. He shook his head at him and continued on. “Alonso is only about how old? Three years old? He pressed those down rather quickly.”
“Actually, he is two by next week. The little monkey is even having a party.” The Captain informed him. “And Martha and I are invited.”
Said little monkey picked up one of the banana peels and threw at Jack and it ended up hitting his chest. The Captain just glared at the little boy before diving in to tickle him. Alonso’s shrieks of laughter echoed throughout of the hub.
Martha could feel the Doctor’s curiosity burning. “He is a great kid.”
The two were standing next to each other watching the Captain and Alonso play. The time lord sighed. “Who is he, Martha? He isn’t an ordinary little boy, is he?”
She didn’t even try to deny it. “No. He is very special.”
“You still didn’t answer my first question.”
“Never said I was going to.”
The Doctor turned his head towards her and she followed. Martha could see the weariness within his face. “I feel myself gravitate towards him, Martha. As if I should know him. Why is that.”
“It’s not my place to say.”
He pressed on. “He looks like her. Am I wrong?”
Her heart sank at the gleam in his eyes. They were glistening. “No. Not at all.”
There was a silence between them and they returned to watching Jack and Alonso. The Captain was gently tossing him into the air and the child smiled wildly. He was a happy little boy and always wanted to have fun.
“Martha, is he-“
“Don’t act like you hadn’t figured it out till now. You had a lot of time to think while Jack and I were on the phone. You are more than capable in a deduction like that.”
“She’s right, you know.” Jack came over with Alonso heaved up over his shoulder. “You may be a jerk, but you aren’t stupid.”
“Me, right? He is-“
Jack held out Alonso towards him. “I think Daddy needs a hug.”
At once, the Doctor pulled Alonso into his chest. The small boy fought instinctively from the sudden affection but soon settled and let his head remain against his father’s chest. The Doctor let one of his hands rest against his son’s back. He smiled with tears in his eyes at the double beating against his hand.
Alonso gurgled something.
“That’s right. I have two just like you. Two hearts.” He kissed the little boy’s head.
The Doctor brought their foreheads together and sent images of love towards him. Over and over again, he told Alonso telepathically that he has returned. Daddy is here.
Alonso grabbed his clothing at once and snuggled into his father’s grasp. The desperation to be so close to him was evident. Martha and Jack watched intently not knowing how to feel. Alonso whimpered slightly only causing the Doctor to hug him tighter.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I haven’t been there.”
Alonso started sobbing quietly.
“It’s okay, baby boy. I’m here. I’m here.”
“Is he going to be okay, Doctor?” Martha asked concerned.
The Doctor nodded his head. “Yeah. He is just overwhelmed. We just reconnected the parental bond that he was supposed to have. It can be a very drastic amount of emotion that poured into him especially at such a young age.”
He felt Alonso bury his face into his suit jacket which muffled a cry.
“Shhh.” The Doctor could feel him feeling so distraught. “Oh you are such a good boy. You have beautiful hair and your eyes are fantastic. I love every little freckle on your body. You look so much like your mum. So very much like her. You are my gorgeous little boy.”
Al? Oh what’s wrong, darling? Why is Mummy’s little boy so sad?
The Doctor tensed while Alonso grabbed his jacket tighter. Surprisingly, the telepathic message comforted the toddler immediately and he began to doze off.
Mummy is almost there, Al. Just a few more minutes. I bet you have been a good boy for Uncle Jack and Aunt Martha.
Alonso was now asleep in the time lord’s arms. Although he was relieved that his son wasn’t suffering any longer, the Doctor frantically looked towards Martha and Jack. They only looked at him curiously.
The sound of a gate opening made him jump, but he didn’t turn around. He would only see the fury in her eyes, her beautiful eyes. Jack and Martha were already walking past him.
“It is really coming down out there. Thankfully, I was able to save my hair.”
Apart from Alonso, her voice was the most stunning thing he had encountered in months.
**********************************************************************************
She disregarded the man in the background for now. There were two familiar people that were approaching her at the moment.
“Shall I take your coat?” Jack asked seductively.
She just chuckled. “Stop it. You’ve had two years. It isn’t going to happen.”
“It’s not like I’ll die waiting.”
A laugh escaped her once more.
“So are you staying for a bit? Casanova here and I get to stay up all night since we had to watch Alonso all day and Gwen and Mickey had to patrol for us.” Martha asked casually.
She shook the drenched umbrella to stall a bit. “Oh, I don’t know. It’s horrid out. There might be a storm later.”
“As far as my readings can tell,” Jack punched a couple buttons on his vortex manipulator. “Just rain. No storms.”
She couldn’t help but sigh. It was accompanied by a slight smirk. “Fine. But we are getting Chinese!”
Martha laughed. “As usual.”
“Alonso does love his egg rolls.” Jack joined in.
“Yes he does.” She carefully removed her coat leaving her in her plain black dress. “And when did you start calling him Alonso?”
“Apparently the little monkey prefers to be addressed by his full name.”
“Says who?”
Both Martha and Jack glanced over their shoulders.
She sighed once more. The man seemed to be frozen in fear. He had his back turned towards her, but she wasn’t blind to see the shiver that traveled his body. And then her eyes inspected his attire. Well that’s new. Even if she was supposed to be furious with him, she had to admit, he was looking pretty good. Huh. No converse.
She eyed Martha and Jack before yelling over at him. “Oi! Skinny! If you aren’t going to say hello, then the least you could do is hand me my son.”
His head turned ever so slowly. Her eyes met with his red strained brown. He wasn’t crying but was certainly on the verge of it.
She forced herself to huff in frustration. “I’m not waiting until Christmas.”
He walked over to the group, Alonso still perfectly fit in his arms. Once they were face to face, he slowly pried Alonso’s grip off of his clothing and handed the boy to his mother. He felt a shock when their hands brushed slightly.
He finally built up the courage to speak. “Donna.”
“Doctor.”
The time lord was at loss of words for a minute. “You-you remember?”
She nodded. “Everything.”
His stuttering continued. “H-How? W-When?”
“Hey.” Donna intentionally interrupted him. “Do you guys mind ordering the food? You know what I like.”
“Of course. We’ll just be going. Jack?” The Captain instantly followed Martha towards his office.
At that moment, Alonso decided to wake into consciousness once more. The young boy wiggled within his mother’s arms, rubbing his face into the crook of her neck. Donna just smiled.
“Hello, Monkey. Are you waking up now? Are you hungry? We are getting some egg rolls, your favorite.”
Alonso finally lifted his head and grabbed his mother’s face. “Mu. Mumma.”
Donna nuzzled her nose against his. “That’s right. Mummy is here now.”
The boy squeaked and placed a wet kiss on his mother’s face. Donna gave her son a sarcastic thank you and kissed him back. The Doctor grinned.
Donna noticed in the corner of her eye. She turned Alonso towards him. “Al, do you know who that is?”
The Doctor was surprised to see Alonso reached out for him. He turned to look at Donna for permission and when she found her smiling, he grabbed his son at once.
“Da! Da!”
“Oh, you can do better than that, son. Come on. Say Daddy.” The Doctor pressed.
“Da!”
The time lord looked over to Donna. She had her arms crossed. “Is there something wrong with his speech? He should be talking by now.”
“His brain had a disruption of energy consumption resulting in slower brain development than normal Galifreyan children. The energy he produced was being used in other places during his first year.”
“Why? Where was the energy going?”
“He had some heart complications right when he was born.”
The Doctor was frantic now. “What sort of complications? Is he having cardiac problems as well?”
“Not anymore.” She sounded relieved. “It was only during his first year. Martha was monitoring him day and night since he had been born. You could say we lived in a hospital room for a year. In fact it was one of the medical rooms here at Torchwood as there was no way Alonso could be treated by regular doctors. Martha winged the entire treatment and I am forever grateful.”
“What was wrong with him? Do you know?”
“Of course I do. He was growing a second heart.”
The time lord’s eyes bulged out. “You mean he wasn’t born with it?”
“No.” Donna answered.
The Doctor looked towards Alonso and the boy had his head rested upon his shoulder. He wasn’t asleep. He was just laying there as if it were the most comfortable position in the world. One of his small hands was clutched to his chest making him able to feel his double heartbeat. “How did he cope?”
Donna breathed deeply. “I heard him cry everyday from the pain due to the rapid replication of his cells. His energy was always completely depleted by the end of the day so he was barely conscious for the first year of his life. I even tried giving him some of my energy. Well, technically speaking, your energy.”
“Did it help?”
“He was born half human, Doctor so he couldn’t have been able to handle time lord functions cleanly. If my head was going to explode from the energy, you could only imagine what it had done to an infant. But he needed it to help the second heart grow. It was either live as a time lord or not at all.”
“So he was dying to stay alive.” His voice was soft.
Donna stepped closer to place and hand on Alonso’s back. The double heartbeat was comforting beyond words. “And he did stay alive.”
The three stood there in the middle of the hub. Alonso’s hand remained at his father’s chest as if the heartbeat was a lullaby to him. Donna mimicked her son’s gesture and her own hand followed the double heartbeat of the two year old. And the Doctor found his own hand making its way to her wrist. He needed to feel her heartbeat too.
Donna immediately pulled her hand away. She brushed it through her hair. “So why was Al crying earlier?”
The Doctor held his breath and let his hand come back to hold up Alonso. “I sorta reconnected our parental bond. He was a bit overwhelmed.”
Her eyes were on her son. “I see.”
“Is that…okay?”
“It’s not like I can do anything about it now.” She input her usual sarcasm. “But he seems happy. He certainly likes laying on you. Isn’t that right, baby boy?”
Alonso had taken his free hand and started sucking his thumb.
“You’re not mad?” The time lord raised an eyebrow.
Donna’s hand came up to press above her chest. “No. Did you go inside his head?”
“It was the only way I could establish the link.”
“So you touched his head?” He could see her hand grasp the black fabric of her dress.
“Yes.” Figuring out her uneasiness, he quickly followed with. “I promise that is all I did. Don’t worry. You have my word.”
Donna swallowed harshly. “You better be telling the truth.”
Her body was tensed. It was scaring him. Alonso even noticed and lifted his head up to eye his mother. Her hand was now fisting the fabric above her chest. There may have even been a shiver here and there.
“Are you alright?”
“Yeah.” She answered quickly. “Will you excuse me a moment? Watch Al, alright?”
“Of course.” His eyes never left hers.
Donna walked off, her heels clicking slightly against the floors of the hub. She entered Jack’s office and was only but a shadow.
The Doctor looked back at Alonso.
“What’s wrong with Mummy, Al?”
The boy pressed both his hands to his father’s chest. “Ow.”
***********************************************************************************
The Doctor had surprisingly found the domesticity of eating Chinese takeout with Martha, Jack , and Alonso relaxing. It was definitely better than sulking in the TARDIS. Anything involving his son was better.
Scratch that. It would be nice if Donna was there with them.
He had asked repetitively where she had gone, but Martha and jack had only given him a shrug or the excuse that she was tired from the days and went for a kip.
Alonso happily ate his egg roll atop his father’s lap. The boy had to use two hands to hold the thing. Everyone just laughed. The Doctor wiped his son’s mouth before allowing him to proceed.
“So,” He started. “How are things going for you guys?”
“Oh, will you look at that. The man actually cares!” Jack exclaimed.
The Doctor let his eyes fall to the ground. Martha, being too kind, answered.
“Torchwood has been quite the experience. I certainly get more of a work out.”
Jack scoffed. “That’s because we do real work here with aliens.”
“UNIT was a good establishment.”
“Admit it. Torchwood is so much better.”
“Shut up.”
The Doctor only smiled. “Well I’m glad. I’m sure Jack is enough of an experience.”
“Oi. I should remind you that I still want to sock you in the face. Besides, I behave most of the time.” Jack thrust a finger at him. “I’ve treated everyone pretty civilized the past few months.”
Martha smirked. “Really? What do you call what you constantly do to Donna?”
“You aren’t harassing her are you?” The time lord’s voice became serious.
“Oh come on.” Jack rolled his eyes. “Donna knows I’m joking. She even plays along sometimes. I remember one time we were taking Alonso out to the pier and I pretended to propose to her. We both kept the act up for so long that we drew in an applauding crowd. We laughed till our sides hurt.”
Martha shoved the Captain. “I remember that! You two walked into the hub in hysterics. I had to grab Alonso before Donna dropped him from laughing.”
“What can I say? The woman knows how to have a little fun.” Jack winked over at the Doctor.
The time lord shook his head. He watched Alonso drink apple juice from his sippie cup. “So what has Donna been up to?”
Both Martha and Jack ate some fried rice before answering.
“Donna works for Torchwood now. Best damn secretary we have ever had.” Jack shoved orange chicken in to his mouth.
“Thank god she isn’t temping anymore. I know how much she hated it.”
Martha swallowed her food before responding. “This has actually been her first real job since having Alonso. She really likes it here.”
“Personally, I think it’s because she has access to two great babysitters 24/7.” The Captain held his hands up.
“Donna certainly makes up for it by getting us extra funding.”
The Captain wiped his mouth. “It’s amazing Doctor. She managed to persuade the government and several large companies to fund us even more. Donna is the master at persuasion. We have enough money to keep our technology updated to anything new and donate to charity.”
“Charity?” The doctor began to wipe Alonso clean of his dinner. “I didn’t know Torchwood did charity.”
“It was the only condition Donna had when she had decided to get us more funding. This was right after Alonso recovered from his condition.” Martha smiled.
“It was a heart research charity wasn’t it?” The Doctor smiled with pride.
Jack couldn’t help but smile as well. “We are the financial supporters of heart research through the entire UK and several organizations in America.”
The Doctor held Alonso face to face with him. “Mummy is brilliant, isn’t she baby boy? Just fantastic, magnificent, just like you!”
The little boy shrieked with laughter. “Mu! Mum!”
“She’s magnificent alright.” Jack chuckled.
“So is that all she does now? Secretary slash accountant for Torchwood?” The Doctor asked curiously.
Martha set down her food deciding she was finally full. “Oh, you are in for a treat. Not only does she do that, but she takes care of all the technology at Torchwood.”
“You could pretty much say she is our new Tosh.” Jack looked down. Martha rubbed his back. “Not that anyone could replace her.”
The Doctor patted the Captain’s knee. “Of course not. She must have been brilliant.”
“She will always be.” Jack half smiled sweetly before smirking. “And she had quite a figure.”
Martha slapped his shoulder. “Jack.”
“Speaking of fine ladies,” He made sure to wink at the Doctor. “When the team is out, Donna instructs us from the hub and monitors everything. You can’t help but listen when there is a shrieking ginger in your ear. Saved me a couple of deaths that one.”
Martha looked towards the Doctor. “She manages to catch every surprise. I don’t know how she can watch seven monitors at once. Never let us down yet.”
“This must have been after her memories were unlocked again? So after Alonso was born? The time lord consciousness helps her.” The Doctor thought out loud.
“And trust me, it is worth it. She doesn’t mind it at all, the endless knowledge. She says if it helps than why resent it?” The Captain explained.
The Doctor asked his next question nervously. “Does Donna ever go out on the field with the team?”
“Oh, no, no, no, no.” Jack shook his head vigorously.
Martha continued. “Donna vowed to never pick up a gun or any kind of weapon which is why she stays here.”
The time lord smiled into his son’s hair, pride swelling. “She’s just…amazing…”
“Quite the catch.” Jack looked towards Martha who gave him the same look of understanding.
“Yes, she is. All those men really missed out. And it’s just as well.”
Surprisingly, it was Martha who replied. “Like you?”
The Doctor’s eyes shot up towards her, but a sudden beeping rang throughout the room and Martha pulled out a device. She grabbed a hidden stylus and started to write upon the small screen of the device. And just as sudden as the event was, Martha stored the device back in her back pocket and sank bank into her chair.
“What was that?” The time lord asked.
Jack looked asked without turning his head. “Everything alright?”
“Great actually. It seems that someone is about to join our little party. Jack?”
The Captain jumped up. “I better go help her down then.”
The Doctor sat dumbfounded by what was happening. It wasn’t till jack had returned with their “special guest” that he paled to white.
No. That wasn’t right. He was pale.
Donna was pure white.
**********************************************************************************
“Oh, shut it, Donna. You get lighter and lighter every time I carry you.” Jack chuckled as he gently laid her down on the couch.
Martha grinned at her. “Are you really going on about that still? I’ve told you, you have lost weight. You look good!”
The ginger-haired woman only smiled with her eyes closed. She wasn’t in her dress anymore, but rather purple pajamas. Jack ran back to his office and returned with a purple duvet. He draped it over Donna up to her neck.
“Mu! Mumm!” Alonso slid down his father’s legs and wobbled over to the couch. Donna weakly opened up the blanket. Jack easily lifted Alonso to lay him next to his mother. Donna replaced the blanket atop both of them and the two snuggled together.
The Doctor sat with a blank face. His eyes were set on the couch where his son and the mother of his child were cuddled. The scene would have been cute if Donna wasn’t as pale as paper. It was the most horrifying sight that he had seen. She was so weak. To hell with daleks and cybermen. The sight of Donna Noble barely holding on to consciousness was what scared him. His head was swimming with questions. But before he can open his mouth, Jack and Martha were already pulling him backwards.
“Wha-?!” The Doctor half yelled but he was shushed violently.
Jack clamped a hand over his mouth. “Don’t make a sound. If you do, I swear I will bloody kill you.”
The time lord tried further to talk which came out as muffled sounds. Martha held him by his chest.
“Doctor, please. Calm down and we will explain everything that we are allowed. Now, talk in whispers.”
Again, the Doctor refused to cooperate. Jack applied more pressure to his mouth.
“You did that, Doctor. The way Donna is right now is because of you.” The Captain saw the fear in the Doctor’s eyes. “Now then, do you want to cause her more pain?” The time lord shook his head tears building in his eyes. “Okay, then. Talk . In. Whispers.”
Jack carefully released the Doctor’s mouth. “W-What happened?”
“She is going through a transition, if you could call it that.” Martha informed him.
The time lord only raised an eyebrow.
“She’s growing a second heart.” Jack blurted out.
“No, no, no. That’s impossible. She is totally human, that can do serious damage to her.” The Doctor was panicking.
“Yes, and you know what you are going to do about it?” Martha pressed him.
“I need to research. I need to find a way to make the process easier as it is probably too late to stop it. The TARDIS should help. Martha do you know how much the heart has grown already? Has there been any disruption with surrounding organs or function? This is bad. She must be in so much pain. First Alonso? Now her? No, there has to be-“
His mouth was clamped down again. This time by Martha. “Stop it, Doctor. No research, no treatment. You are going to do absolutely nothing about this.”
The Doctor stared at both Martha and Jack dumbfounded. “Have you two gone mental? That second heart can disrupt her entire body.”
“That’s where you are wrong.” Martha crossed her arms. “That second heart is the only thing keeping her alive. To answer your question, the second heart is about halfway complete.”
“How is the second heart keeping her alive?”
Jack replied this time. “The heart is giving her brain more than double the amount of blood flow which in turn gives the brain more than double the amount of nutrients it needs to function. With the extra energy and nutrients, her brain can process the time lord knowledge completely fine. Once the heart is completely grown, both of her hearts will sync eventually. It’s a strain at the moment, especially since her body rejects some of the cardiac cells that contain time lord energy, but Donna needs that heart.”
The Doctor looked at the Captain seriously. “Is that how she remembered? Because of the second heart allowing her brain to handle the knowledge?”
“No.” Martha responded. “That was actually Alonso. During her pregnancy, Alonso absorbed just the right amount of your energy to allow Donna to remember. That energy that Alonso absorbed eventually allowed him to grow a second heart as well.”
Jack continued. “Although the excess energy was put into Alonso, Donna’s brain still couldn’t handle your consciousness. She had chronic severe migraines for a year. In reality, she would have died within a year or two after Alonso’s birth. The small energy transfers she did for Alonso did nothing as well.”
“Still, the energy in Donna’s body would have needed a kick start to begin on something drastic as growing a second heart. Where did that come from?”
Martha sighed. “It was the only time she came out on the mission with us. Alonso was with Sylvia in case you were wondering. We needed Donna to disable a mind controlling device and the central controls were literally on a large antenna at the very top of a building. There was a storm that night and right after disabling the antenna, lightening struck the top of the building, on the antenna, with Donna still working. She was electrocuted. I don’t even know what happened. When we got up there, she was only unconscious. My best guess is, she died, but your energy resurrected her after being kick started by the lightening.”
“She is deathly afraid of storms now. It’s been almost nine months since that incident. Donna had finally built up the courage to go out in the rain just a month ago.” Jack nodded his head at him.
The Doctor was antsy. He looked back at Donna and was surprised to find her sitting up, the color back in her face, having Alonso stand atop her thighs. She held him with a smile while the boy kept touching his mother’s face, grinning at her adorably. It was like nothing had happened.
“Fast, isn’t it? The way she just comes back to life?” Jack had looked over his shoulder.
Martha peeked behind her. “Sometimes the nutrient packs we give her can bring her right back up. Then she is just fine until another burst of growth happens when the heart is rebuilding. Other times, I think she forces herself to get better. Alonso went through the same thing.”
The time lord rubbed his stubble. Jack and Martha can tell he was frustrated. His eyes returned to them. “I have to do something. I can’t let her go through that.”
“I’m sorry, Doctor. But you can’t.” Martha said sympathetically.
He towered over them. “Why do you two keep restricting me? Your friend is suffering and all you two are doing is letting things take its course. What kind of friends would do that?”
“Better friends than you have been.”
Martha shook off the Doctor’s intimidation and turned around. “Donna. Careful.”
Donna returned her eyes to Alonso. The face of her son would keep her calm.
“Donna-“
“Don’t.” She said back before the Doctor could finish. “Not right now.”
The time lord was defeated. Jack only smirked. Martha and he returned to their seats.
“Now then, where is my chow mein?”
**********************************************************************************
She woke up slowly to the feeling of someone missing from her arms. Donna panicked at once, her head turning every which way. The Hub was dark and her eyes blurred from sleep. Fortunately, she found the Doctor standing at the other end of the Hub, a bright orange mess of hair lying on his shoulder. Donna let out a sigh of relief.
Next to her on the couch, Jack and Martha laid sleeping, Martha with her head atop Jack’s shoulder and Jack snoring loudly with his mouth open. Donna only rolled her eyes. The group had decided to watch a movie. One by one, each of them fell asleep on the couch. The last thing that Donna could remember was Alonso placing his head upon her breasts and the Doctor looking at her in the darkness to her left.
She pushed herself to move out of the blankets and stand on her feet. Once or twice, she wobbled and sat back down. Donna may have got her color back, but she was definitely still weak. Once she finally was able to stand, she held her head. The dizziness took much longer to fade.
Her head somewhat clear, Donna started towards the Doctor. You couldn’t even call the way she moved as walking. It was more of shuffling her feet across the floor, thank god for her socks, and a slight limp on her right. She must have looked pathetic. Bloody great.
The Doctor was only a few feet away. If anything, she thought he would have turned around by now, but he was still facing the other direction. Donna’s legs were starting to give out and she feared she would face plant into the cold ground of the Hub. Her next step with her right foot was the last and she grabbed for the Doctor’s suit jacket.
Donna regret the action at once as the time lord was startled and pulled away from her clutch sending her to the floor on her back. She exchanged a yell with biting her tongue. She spat out at the taste of blood. Fantastic.
“Oh my god. Donna! Are you alright?”
She groaned. “Shit. My head…”
The Doctor searched for eye contact. He was now crouched close to her trying to make sure she wasn’t harmed. “What’s wrong with your head? Do you think you’re concussed?”
Donna could feel his breath in her face. Even with the dizziness, she declared he smelled quite nice. Donna shook the thought away. “Get away from me, Spaceman. I can’t breathe with you in my face.”
“Sorry! So sorry!” The Doctor stood up at once. There was a pause before he talked again. “Is that blood on your lip?”
“Doctor, just shush for a minute. I can’t calm down with you pestering me.”
When there was no reply, Donna blew out some air. Alright, Donna old girl, calm down. You aren’t hurt, just a bit sore but that hasn’t stopped you, right? Of course not. You’ll be fine. Just relax. That’s it. We don’t want another collapse today. Just relax.
After about a minute, she felt a shuffle next to her. She kept her eyes closed and soon enough, an arm was touching her right side. They were both on the floor now. There was a sudden weight atop her and Donna instantly held onto it knowing it was her son. His head was atop her chest once again and she ran her hands through the small boy’s hair.
“Are you…alright…now?”
Donna still kept her eyes closed. “Yeah. I’m fine. Calm now.”
“The, um, blood?”
“Bit me tongue.”
“I see. Is it okay?”
“Just a bit of blood. No worries.”
There was a silence. Donna continued to stroke Alonso’s hair. It was the Doctor who broke the quietness.
“Are you sure you wouldn’t be more comfortable on the couch? I can take you there.”
She sighed. “I’m fine. It was getting a bit hot with the other two sharing the duvet with me. The floor isn’t so bad. It’s quite cool.”
“If you say so. I just think you should be resting somewhere appropriate.”
Donna groaned. The Doctor stopped at once. “I’m kind of used to this feeling by now. I have collapses quite often, you know. It’s just been awhile since I have had two in one day.”
“You collapsed today? When?”
“I collapse every day. It’s just a matter of when. And also if I’m put under stress. The hormones and adrenaline released when I get stressed tends to stimulate the heart to grow.”
The Doctor hit himself in the forehead. “Which is why you collapsed when we were talking. God, I’m so thick!”
“Although I would easily agree, don’t go beating yourself up about it. Literally. You didn’t know. Plus it’s not like I can control the normal stress in my life. Martha makes sure I don’t overdue anything.”
“I’m so sorry, Donna.”
“It’s alright, Doctor.”
“No really, I am so, so sorry.”
“If you apologize one more time, you will really be sorry.” Her normal brash attitude seemed to shut the time lord up. Donna continued. “Anyways, today, other than just earlier, I gave out when I was dropping off Alonso here with Jack and Martha.”
“Oh.” The Doctor looked towards her. Donna’s eyes were still closed. He decided to change the subject rather than bombard her with questions about her health. “And where were you heading off to?”
“I was making my way to one of the research facilities in Cardiff. I get invited from time to time to help with the heart research we support.”
The Doctor gave out a genuine laugh. “Look at you! Donna Noble. Scientist!”
“I know.” She gave a low chuckle. “I am pretty brilliant. Just because I have all your knowledge, doesn’t mean you came up with the ideas. I am very proud of myself.”
“That’s…just gorgeous.”
“What is?”
The time lord smiled. “The way you talk about yourself. You believe in yourself. I like it.”
“Hopefully I don’t sound conceited, but I like it too. I realized that I have a pretty important existence in the universe and other people can as well, they may just not know it.” She half smiled. “I always try to make a change if I can.”
“That’s really great, Donna. You’ve accomplished more than enough.” He nudged her.
She nudged him back. “And my greatest accomplishment, I couldn’t have done without you.”
“And that would be?”
“Making this little monkey here, of course.” Donna carefully rubbed Alonso’s back.
The Doctor watched Alonso sleep. “He’s absolutely beautiful, Donna. He looks like you. And his name is just brilliant. Why did you choose it?”
“Our baby boy got my looks. It would only be fair if I gave him a name that you would adore.”
“That’s all I get? A name?” He teased.
Donna shook her head. “You dunce. You got that plus Alonso has too much of your personality. The monkey is almost never sad. Always wanting to play and move around. Reminded me of a child I used to hang around. Think you know him?”
“Oi!” He exclaimed.
Donna only laughed. She finally opened her eyes and turned her head towards him. Their faces were mere inches away and their minds were brought back to that special night.
“I need to know. Are you furious with me, Donna?” His eyes were desperate.
Donna sighed. “I should be, right?”
“But are you?”
There was a pause before anyone spoke. Donna looked away from him for a moment, looking back at Alonso who tightly gripped her pajama top. When returning her gaze to the Doctor, she found Alonso’s other hand holding his father’s two fingers. The Doctor held them there, both of them needing the contact.
“No, I’m not mad at you.” She let her head touch with his shoulder. The Doctor scooted closer to allow her the cushion. “But I was. Right before Alonso was born and when I got back my memories. I was raging. And not like I have ever been on the TARDIS. I was throwing things, yelling, I even swore at Jack and Martha, blaming them for letting you take my memories away. But the one thing that infuriated me the most was the fact that I can hear your voice in my head.”
“You didn’t try anything, did you?” He asked nervously.
Donna closed her eyes again. “Oh, I tried things alright. And there is one day I’ll never forget.”
“What happened?”
“The day I finally went mad, I held a gun to the side of my head. I was tired. So tired of hearing your voice inside my head, mocking me. How could I live when I could hear you, reminding me that you are out there exploring the universe without me. I promised you forever. You said okay, you said you knew. But I was dumped back here on earth to live my life like an ignorant idiot.”
She looked as if she were visualizing the day. He let her continue, tears stinging his eyes. “And the look on Jack and Martha’s faces. They were terrified. Martha was sobbing and Jack, he was crying as well begging me on his knees. I can remember that I didn’t care at all. My mind was set on pulling that trigger.”
“So what happened since you didn’t.” The Doctor’s voice was firm.
“My water broke.”
Donna didn’t need to open her eyes to know that the Doctor was gaping at her. She just continued to play with Alonso’s curls. Her hand suddenly brushed up against someone else’s on Alonso’s back.
“Thank you, baby boy. For saving Mummy.”
Donna smiled. “I thank him every day. I love him so much. Right as I was to pull the trigger, I heard this voice. Not yours, but a little boy’s voice. ‘I’m coming, Mummy. I need you.’”
“It must have been quite a birthday for Alonso.” The Doctor breathed deeply.
“Definitely. But something like that isn’t going to happen again.” She brought her head up just enough to kiss the little boy’s head. “I’m never going to pick up a gun again. And I’m always going to be there for him.”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
The Doctor surprised her by kissing her on the cheek. She felt her hearts speed up slightly. “For being there. For always being there for him. He loves you very much.”
Donna didn’t speak. She was both trying to process what just happened and calm down before anything bad happened. After a minute, she still didn’t talk and the Doctor quickly responded again.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. Are you alright? Are you feeling okay?” He was on his forearms looking at her.
She opened her eyes to be greeted with the Doctor’s face hovering over her. “I’m fine. Don’t worry about it. Although, what did I say about you being in my face? Need to breath here.”
“Sorry! Sorry!” He moved away. The Doctor returned to his place next to her. “Just one more question.”
“Oh what now?” She half laughed.
“Why won’t you let me help you?”
Donna sighed once more. To be honest, she was getting pretty sleepy just lying on the floor. Nonetheless, she fought to keep her consciousness. “Because I refuse.”
“Donna.” He whined her name like he used to do all the time. It almost made her smile. “I can help reduce the pain and I have energy tablets that can give you ten times the energy than the nutrient packs you usually get.”
“No.” She was more firm this time. “You have to understand.”
“Well I don’t. So do you mind explaining it to me?”
“Alonso, Doctor.” Donna looked at him with determined eyes. “He had to go through the same thing I am going through right now for an entire year. The moment he came into this world, he had to suffer daily pain. He was in and out of consciousness in seconds. You don’t know how many times I cried next to his cot, even through the migraines. He got better without any of your help and your special medication. So will I.”
The Doctor returned her gaze. “That’s…very brave of you.”
“It’s the least I can do. The little monkey saved me.” Donna hugged her son tighter.
“Fine. I’ll leave you be. On one condition.”
“You know, you shouldn’t have any conditions. You should be the one begging.”
“I was hoping to do that and maintain some of my dignity.”
She let out a laugh. “Sorry, but you have none left.”
She was surprised to hear him laughing too. “Alright, I deserved that. But I do want to beg you of something.”
“Alright, continue.”
He cleared his throat. “I want to stay here with you. All of you. Until you get better at least. If you still want to kick me out by that time, I’ll go. But I really want to be there for you. And Alonso. I don’t think I can leave him again.”
Donna didn’t answer right away. That fact scared the Doctor and a worried look spread across his face. She just closed her eyes and huffed.
“Well, if you are going to stay here, then make yourself useful and get Alonso and I the duvet.”
The Doctor smiled widely before jumping up and running off to the couch. He gently swiped the duvet away from Martha and Jack and grabbed a pillow. He quickly returned to Donna and made her comfortable on the floor. Alonso continued to sleep on top of her. The Doctor lay down next to Donna once again and propped himself on his elbow to watch her. Again, he was brought back to that night. He could feel the same nerves he had to touch her.
“It doesn’t have to mean anything, you know.” She said sleepily.
“What doesn’t?”
Her response was just an understandable mumble. “You and I. Having a kid.”
“That’s where you’re wrong, Donna.” He brushed a ginger strand away from her cheek.
Donna moaned the equivalent to a “what?”
“It means everything to me. I love Alonso with all my heart. And you know what?”
She was snoring lightly as he completed what he was saying.
“I love you.

May or may not continue writing this. Oh well, I hope you enjoyed~
I feel like writing another story so if anyone has prompts feel free to send them, preferably DonnaxTen or Tatennant. Thank youuu :)
DonnaxTen fic
Voila, my first DonnaxTen fic and I honestly don't know how to feel about it. It's not as good as most fics you all read, but I'm not as good as most writers ;) Thanks and a big hug for Teela for making sure I didn't write too many mistakes, I really appreciate it.
I Dreamed a Dream
Every night a rich, somewhat happy woman went to bed and every morning she would wake up and know she dreamt but she could never remember any of it. She assumed it was just that she was so dim and so unimportant that anything she could dream just wasn’t worth remembering. She didn’t know of the burning that was being kept at bay in her mind or the danger of what would happen if she really did remember what she dreamt. Every night however, a small voice in her head, the little piece of her locked away would get its chance at something more than living it’s life in a steel box and mourning the day when it was a masterpiece in the eyes of the most wonderful and terrible man she had ever met The only man who had ever made her better than nothing at all.
The voice wasn’t there when the woman awoke; it was safely hidden away with the little piece of him she had left that she would never know was there. Deep in that box the most important woman in all of creation and the smallest piece of the lonely god sat and lived together. Every night the dream was exactly the same but the scenery changed. Once it was a bedroom, another time it was the console room they had practically lived in for so long, another was a foreign beach they had been to together on another planet and had the best day. This time it was the living room of her new house.
He has his arm draped over her as they sit on the couch and her head is leaned on his shoulder. “I miss you! I’d rather be dead and knowing than feel like this! Doctor I mean nothing! I know I never really meant much but I least I felt like I did.” She said quietly to him with a broken heart.
“Donna you always have been and always will be important!” He promised her. “I couldn't watch you die! It may have been selfish but I just couldn't. Not you.” he said desperately. “You have to forgive me! Please?” He begged looking down at her with the same heartbreak on his face as she felt in her chest.
“But you left me here! Completely alone!” she blamed angrily pulling from his arm feeling hurt and angry.
“You have Shawn and….” He started but she cut him off.
“No I don’t doctor! I am locked away! I get pulled into darkness as soon as she wakes up! I have to sit quietly while she gets to go out and live! It’s not even a good life but at least she has one!” She yelled at him with tears rolling down her cheeks. She was living a prison sentence because she decided to save the world! How was that fair?
“You’re a part of her! Can’t you see that?” he tried desperately wishing he could have found a way to save her.
“Yeah except, ya know, I can’t see the light of day. She goes out and I sit in some lock off part of her mind! In the darkness and the silence and I am completely alone!” She screamed
“You’re not alone Donna.” He whispered quietly and sadly. Every night he said that, desperately wanting her to hear him, and she never did. She did today.
“What…. What do you mean I’m not alone Doctor? What the hell am I if not alone? Who’ve I got and don’t you dare mention her family I’ve never even met them!” she said confused and angry and standing now staring at him. The words of her dream were changing now. It wasn’t the same as every day! This was new and different.
“I’m here, Donna. You’ve got me.” he said standing and walking to her.
“You’re just a figment of my imagination, A creation of my subconscious to appease my desires.” She reasoned with her met crisis mind shaking her head.
“No I’m really not. When you touched that hand you didn’t just get a Time Lord mind. Donna you got a piece of me and I settled in that beautiful brilliant brain of yours. I am the part of the Doctor that can never leave you Donna! I will always be here!” He said brushing her hair behind her ear gently.
“What about when I’m locked away during the day?” She said disbelievingly but a small part of her was hopeful and somewhere in her mind it made perfect sense.
“I’m there too, you've just never noticed me. I tried but you didn’t. I am here with you and I’m not leaving.” He said gently his hand settling on her shoulder.
“But you hate being still!” She reasoned hugging herself tightly looking down sadly.
“Donna, we have to two biggest minds in this universe, we could make our own adventures.” He offered smiling.
“You and me, traveling, in the TARDIS. Forever this time?” She asked looking him in the eyes with hope shining there for the first time in the 3 years since he’d left her in her mum and gramps kitchen.
“Forever and more.” He promised and wrapped her in his arms letting her rest her head on his chest. “Just you and me!” he added.
She smiled and lifted her head and gently kissed his lips, something that had been in each of her dreams since that time with the Giant wasp and Agatha Christie, and he eagerly responded pulling her to the couch.
That morning when she woke up the rich woman felt happier than she had in a longtime. She was smiling and felt somehow more important and meaningful than the day before. She still couldn’t remember but her life and her home felt less like a prison and more like a world of possibilities. Suddenly the fact that she had chosen to make every door in her house blue made perfect sense and brought a smile to her face and she pulled out her long dress style shirt and coat and jeans that she hadn’t worn in years and felt the world might just be ok because Donna Temple-Noble had a place in it and in the stars, right where she belonged.
