Donnington Castle
Donnington Castle’s 14th century twin gatehouses survive within impressive earthworks. During the Civil War Charles I was based in Oxford and in 1643 he sent the army to seize Donnington Castle from Parliamentarian John Packer. Charles I’s men were successful in their mission and they built defences to protect the castle. Donnington was attacked several times, the castle still bares the scars of cannon balls on the gatehouse, leaving it badly damaged. Parliament voted to demolish the castle in 1646 because it was so badly damaged. The site is truly remarkable and is the perfect spot to take your four legged companion for a walk -RoxyB.
Donnington Castle took a pounding in the Civil war, where it was besieged for 20 months, and defended by only 200 men. I love the scars of battle left on the facade. I tell you, that Oliver Cromwell ruins everything, Ireland, the kings neck, castles ect. -TommyC.
