We must know our true roots
By this work I aim to analyze and exalt how even our roots and culture can be constructed in an ambiguous way that we aren’t even aware of. My main focus will be in how by the use of the terms "Taínos" and "Jíbaros" in different writings, Dr. Curet attributes a specific definition to each one in his writting Indigenous Revival, Indigeneity, and the Jíbaro in Borikén. It should be mentioned that the doctor through his writing constantly emphasizes the fact that both terminologies were invented and used to designate groups of people by academics, which do not take into account that Puerto Rican society is composed of multiple ethnic groups and mixtures of them, and use the terms as generalizations of the entire Puerto Rican society. In addition, he comments on the misuse of the terms in which both are acquainted as being similar or even as if they were synonymous without being so.
Making differentiation between the two terms, “taínos” and “jíbaros”, the doctor establishes different occasions in which mention of the terms has been made and in what context they have been used. By analyzing the examples, one can conclude that “taíno” is used to encompass and highlight the indigenous groups of Puerto Rico and other parts of the Greater Antilles. In the context of the tri-racial model that can describe in a broad manner the ethnic composition of Puerto Rican society, the term is used in substitution of Indian since this second is somehow inclusive since it does not distinguish the origin of these people. On the other hand, the term “jíbaro” is used to refer to rural, peasant and “mestizo” populations. Although occasions are known in which the term has been used with negative connotation to emphasize that the person or group is an aggressive, rude and wild, it is understood that this is used to describe the degree of miscegenation of Puerto Ricans. This miscegenation is attributed mostly to mixture of Europeans, Indians and Africans, but it is necessary to, also, take into account the great contribution of the multiple migratory groups. That is why the information compiled by Dr. Curet can conclude or help validate the idea that "jíbaros" was used to characterize rural populations or as a racial term. In addition we can see the relationship that this mentions when highlighting that among groups themselves they were called "jíbaros" in a negative way to those more primitive, which is still used among the Puerto Rican colloquium in a derogatory way.
The distinction between both terms is necessary if you try to know and understand the complex Puerto Rican culture, keeping in mind that this is only a very small part of it.
