In Yoshi’s Island the platforming is completely trivialized. Only select levels have usual platforming challenges like bottomless pits or stage hazards, and on top of that you have a flutter jump that slows your movement & maintains altitude (if performed correctly you do not lose *any* vertical height, most players will lose it very slowly). Secondly, the ‘combat’ is trivialized, because Yoshi can swallow almost every enemy immediately at a distance, convert them into ammunition & shoot enemies with them from even further.

The effect is that the platforming & combat are de-emphsized compared to typical platformers of the time. The focus is placed instead on exploring very large, often non- or semi-linear levels, discovering secrects & collecting items (stars, flowers & red coins). By diminishing the platforming & broadening the exploration they arrive at a similar design to the european ‘exploration platformers’ like Turrican.

Wario does this too, to an even greater degree - in Warioland 3 & 4 you cannot actually die at all, for example - although Wario is actually less powerful than Mario, having a short jump which falls quickly & no long range attacks.

Anyway, Turrican arrives here in a different way - not by shifting the focus of a platformer but by broadening the scope of a run n’ gun. In Turrican there is more emphasis placed on platforming than in most run n guns, and therefore the levels are afforded more verticality, and platformer style collectibles & secrets are added (probably directly cribbed from Mario - the developers’ first game was a Mario clone). Yoshi’s Island & Turrican also have the similarity of giving you mainly long-range attacks.

Most of this has to do with all 3 games drawing on Metroid, more than anything else - but Nintendo were certainly aware of Manfred Trenz, the developer of Turrican, by 1995, because they sued him for that clone I mentioned :P So you never know...
