Blog Post #4: Choosing for the Appearance

Dexter’s relationship with Rita demonstrates how marriage begins as part of his disguise rather than him being in love with her. From the beginning, Dexter describes Rita as “perfect” because she does not expect physical intimacy after surviving an abusive marriage. For Dexter, this makes the relationship convenient for his masked identity. He believes he is incapable of real emotion because of his dark passenger, so he chooses Rita because he knew she wouldn’t demand emotional love.

Rita strengthened Dexter’s public image. Being a boyfriend, then a husband, and a father makes him appear normal and trustworthy. With this Dexter “didn't have the time or inclination for a romantic relationship, but staying true to Harry's Code”, which states (Melzer et al 1).  “Blend in socially to maintain appearances” and “Don’t get emotionally involved” (Dexter). With this being the case, Rita initially functions as protection for his secret identity.

However, over time, Dexter begins to develop genuine feelings for Rita and her children. He experiences moments of attachment and vulnerability. Even though these feelings start to grow, he never abandons his commitment to killing. Dexter convinces himself that he can love his family while continuing to murder criminals. He frames his acts of killing as protecting society and his new family from worse predators.

Rita’s death ultimately reveals the tragic contradiction at the heart of Dexter’s identity. He believes he is a moral killer because he follows a set of rules. He believes Harry’s Code transforms him from a monster to a representation of justice. Dexter’s inability to surrender his dark passenger destroys the “normal” life he tries to build. The apartment, the hunt for Trinity, and his strategic marriage all reveal that Dexter’s loyalty lies with Harry’s Code.
