Aidan and Russell
I’m sure Aidan must have been happy to see him again
A collection of vampire films and tv shows
some people just need a little extra motivation to be their best selves, you know? like, a high-five that really hits home.
my love and gripe with hal yorke
I can FINALLY talk about Hal! Not exactly in full detail, as I always tell people that I can't do so if I haven't watched and studied his character enough to know them like the back of my hand, BUT nonetheless, in some shape or form I can talk about him now that I've finished Being Human. So, getting right to it...
My gripe comes from the way he was written. Not the OCD, dorky Hal. That was dealt with pretty perfectly and it's why I love him. No, my problem lies with the dark side of him. Lord Hal, Lord Harry, Henry Yorke... whatever you wanna call that part of him. What brought these thoughts on was... writing it for myself, and writing for Lord Hal, the dark side of Hal, is undoubtedly satisfying because I can write him in my own image and I can do what I think the show was trying to do (as best as they could with what they had).
Canonically, they tried to amp him up to be this evil bastard who managed to apparently scare even Ivan and Hettie. He was one of the frontrunners and dictators of the end of the world, literally a poster boy for the vampire take-over. Personally, I never bought it. Seeing Hal and seeing how he is this "stiff upper lip" kind of guy, how he did his own thing and led his own groups of vampires in the past, how he was worshipped by men like Cutler and Fergus... in terms of his darker side, I anticipated a cunning, sadistic monster who could NEVER function in the modern world with normal people. If that side of him had taken over, I envisioned myself panicking at the thought of Tom going home to him. If they really committed to "Lord Hal", it should've been terrifying to have him interact with the other characters. It would then make sense for him to be practically having seizures in his bed, drenched in sweat, veins popping out of his skin, white-knuckling the bedsheets, to fight the bloodlust, to fight that side of him.
I've gushed about Hal openly. I don't fear him. At all. When he was threatening that coroner in Season 4, I was on the verge of drooling. My eyes were going hazy. I was smirking. Like, dude, I love him and I want him and if I was in the realm of Being Human, I'd try my best to make it happen.
I don't view him in the same way as I view Mitchell and I've made that clear in my review posts. Though, as much as I'd like to say I'm immune to Mitchell's hotness and charm, I'm not. I would wholeheartedly wait in line to have a chance with him, like most straight and bisexual women who watch Being Human. BUT I've also said this before: seeing black-eyed, fang-y, pissed off or hungry Mitchell in any scenario, anywhere, would be a nightmare to me. He's pretty terrifying when he's in that zone. His haunted eyes and tone as he says "it's the ghost" upon seeing Annie after the Box Tunnel 20 was bad enough. I didn't want Annie and George anywhere near him when he was like that. Whenever he was with any human woman, specifically Becca in the first episode, I was panicked.
Hal never made me react like that. Even when he arrived to the date with Alex, blood-drunk and pervy, I was like... it's not alarming enough for me to be shouting "get out of there, Alex!" He didn't even seem fully committed to having sex with her and/or drinking her dry. She got up and left. I half-expected him to harass her and cause a massive scene, maybe push her up against the bar, follow her out... anything other than sit down and let her leave.
One of the vampire parts of Hal, the dark parts, that I thought the show excelled at was the scene where Alex left him alone with her body and he takes about five seconds before darting to the floor and licking up her congealed, maggot-covered blood off the floor like some animal. It was disgusting and desperate and messy and amazing. The added touch was when Alex returns and Hal stands up and has this ashamed puppy-dog look to him, nose and mouth covered in her blood.
I think a lot of his character was great. It was just a matter of reusing the same storylines and format of Mitchell -- on-the-wagon vampire who fights his addiction, but is reeled in by other vampires from his past and eventually ends up giving into the blood.
Warmth in Warning Pt.5
Mitchell’s Pov
I glance at the communal calendar we keep in the hall as I finish with my shower. “Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck,” I mutter willing the letters I’m reading to change. My head snaps in the direction I hear George and Annie’s voices. “George!”
“George,” I pant as I all but slide into the kitchen. “I need the isolation room for the next week or so.”
“What? Why?”
